Transmission Problems......

Im not a professional when it comes to cars so bear with me here. Im 18 so I still go to school. I have a 1994 camry LE V6 and this morning i was sitting on a slight hill about to pull into school when I hit the gas to move and the car just started revving. I continued to shift from drive to park to 2. i tried everything. I had to drift backwards down the hill to a place where i was off the road. After ten minutes i tried it again and the car went straight up the hill. It drove fine on the way home so I dont know what to do. Should I go get it looked at and has this ever happened before?

Your transmission is slipping. The clutch packs are like brake pads. They wear out with time and ATF pressure can no longer apply them properly.

But this also means that even if they are fine, low ATF pressure can cause this as well. That's why others suggested checking the condition and level of the ATF.

Has the pan ever been dropped, strainer changed, and the pan/magnets wiped clean? Sticking valve body components can be another cause. A plugged strainer can do this too.

The only thing the owner can DIY is to change out the strainer, wipe the pan, and refill using High Mileage ATF, like Valvoline MaxLife. Cleanliness and fluid level accuracy are very important. See how this changes things, if any.

Yeah, I seem to recall reading something about some batch of problematic torque converters as well.
