Anyone replaced that kinked up pipe on the backside of the 1mz where the 2 exhaust manifold pipes go into 1 just before cat with something flowing all the exhaust gases the same direction? That pipe turns the exhaust 180 backwards!
I want to know if take the time to build a new connector pipe if it will make any difference at all if this is the only change. I would think it would reduce the backpressure and hopefully even the flow between the two banks. Maybe give it better midrange but anticipate it could hurt the bottom end torque at low RPM.
Any thoughts?

Off topic to my own post (but I can do this), bigbird, tell us what its like to drive a fwd car Camry with all that power!
I mean, everone talks about having more, going faster, blah blah, but what's it like to really drive it? Does it yank the wheel out of your hand, bust loose, go into uncontrollable wheel spin. . . What share anything you like.
Thanks,

i had a fabricated one installed on my gen4, but unless you have the means to do it yourself then youll just have to tell an exhaust shop what you want done. the 2 biggest improvements can be found in collector and the diameter of the tubing past that collector( where its crimped before the flex pipe. easiest thing to do is to have a Y collecotr installed jsut before the flex pipe and then have the rear bank down pipe run to that instead of to the front. If you are concerned with keeping the pipes equal legnth then your looking at a little harder setup. either one will produce gains.
and to answer your question...its fun. with the auto, its like driving it stock...with more power. i dont have enough to have it torque steer very much, plus i dont have a limited slip.
So is it fair to say that Flexie goes away? It sounds like some the "chocking" takes place right there. I have access to a mandrel pipe bender, been making rollbars, bumpers, pipes, but no headers or real precision stuff yet.
I'm thinking the system won't like the flex link missing. I best get a solid dog bone and replace the shock absorber (although its not leeaking) but the V6 sure does move plenty under load.
Thanks!
You got any pictures of the mod'd y-pipe? I wonder if I can jack one from the bone-yard or engine salvage place to rework it and make a clean swap? Then again its slim pickins in these parts. . .

thats a great thing to do. better to test and build with a separate one. as far as the flex pipe, mine was replaced with a short one about 6 inches long and it worked fine. i wouldnt go without one though. unfortuantly i dont have pics anymore of the Ypipe i had, my old puter crapped out eariler this month and wiped my files out.
The same 'crimped' design is seen on modern day Camrys as well as many other V6 configurations, such as from Nissans.
Some say you loose backpressure, hence loose some low end power by removing it, so installing a high flo cat or high flo resonator instead of running straight pipes would be recommended, for NA purposes at least.
I'm not sure how much gain you would actually reap, probably more of a difference in sound then anything.

if you rework the entire Y-pipe and nothing else youll gain nearly twice the power of modifying the rest of the exhaust(NA). sound is not what youd be doing this for.
yep yep...y-pipe is a must if you want to do the exhaust right.
my donor car had a funny y-pipe... it was obviously aftermarket made by some 3rd rate muffler shop
it was so restrictive...at the merger point, the pipe was squished flat with only like one inch in width.
the car responded very funny...it was a torque beast low end but high end was totally gutless...and as a result the engine revved higher cruising on highway..
