Adding a Spoiler Without Drilling Trunk Lid??

TOTAl noob question follows. Ok so I found a guy parting out his '95 V6 XLE in my area for god only knows what reason (he mentions the car has 150 k miles and has a rack and pinion issue seems fixable to me!?!?!? But hey who cares, not my problem)

http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/cto/1573529613.html

Guy reposted with a phone number yesterday:

http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/pts/1579487384.html

So ladies and gents, here is my question, the car appears to be a 6M1 V6, just like mine and I am interested in the OEM spoiler on this car for aesthetic reasons only. Would it be possible to install the spoiler WITHOUT drilling into the deck lid?? Would double sided tape work (althought I'd reckon that would be unsafe at highway speeds...)?

how you plan on wiring the brake light without a hole on the trunk lid?

I'd suppose you can buy the spoiler with the trunk lid.

I was planning on getting a bit creative with that and wiring the 12 V wire along the inner body of the spoiler body itself until the edge and slipping it into the trunk on the edge (where spoiler meets the deck lid). Dunno, if I really need too I can drill on VERY small whole, just barely enought to fit the wiring thru it and attaching the rest of the spoiler. But that was my issue, how do I attach the spoiler without having to worry about it flying off... I have really been wanting to attach a third brake light pulser to my car and a spoiler would be the perfect location for that...

EDIT: Reason why I'd rather not drill is due to fear of rust around drill points.

That's what silicone sealant is for. Drill the holes, apply a thick bead of sealant around the holes, then mount the spoiler.

Why do you need a spoiler? I always thought this looks too ricey. It is kinda ok if it is factory pre-installed, but to install it yourself.... By drilling the trunk lid.... Hmmmm.....

^ well, that is what they did at the factory. They drilled holes into the trunk lid, and bolted a spoiler onto it.

+1, that's exactly why I ask the question about drilling. 'Cause that's how the factory does it... But uibalnme, another question, how hard is it to drill holes into the deck lid, would I be able to do this myself, having a variable speed drill and (buying) the proper drill bit?

maybe you could put some bondo or fiberglass stuff underneath it? or maybe contact cement? gonna be more messier i'd suppose, plus if you tried to take that off, im sure some paint is going with it

its really easier done then said lol. when i bought the sc2 spoiler off bird, he suggested i get help from another person, but i did it all alone!

so my friend, as long as you have a sharpie at hand, and a ruler so you can make sure its exactly where you want it, the rest is in the drill bits.

start with the small bits first to make sure a tight screw fit, cuz you can never go back once the hole is big

+1 on drilling the holes. It should not be hard to protect it from rust.

It shouldn't be too hard to drill through the deck lid. It's not that thick. Also, the holes should be a bit bigger than the mounting bolts to allow for minor adjustments, forward, back, left, or right. I'd say at most 2 sizes larger. Before anyone says that's too big, that's what washers are for.

You don't need bondo, fiberglass, contact cement, or any of that. You need, as stated before. a sharpie, a tape measure, a drill, a set of drill bits, washers, and silicone sealant. Oh yeah, don't forget some blue painters tape to protect the paint while you get it all centered.

If you are truly scared of drilling holes then just buy the trunk lid with the spoiler.

Deck lid was repainted last June after a rear end collision, I don't want to replace it with a deck lid with 15 year old paint... But thanks for trying!!

buy the spoiler for cheap from the CL guy, then ebay it.

your car will look better this way. and you'll make money.

do not attempt sticky tape and spoilers. or glue. or epoxy. there is enough useless shit in the median as it is.

The spoiler is held on by small bolts and double sided tape. If you remove the trunk liner on the lid, there are holes in the trunk lid bracing. I think the holes are in the bracing even if the spoiler is not installed. Then the just the lid would need to be drilled if the spoiler was added. You would need deep socket to reach the mounting bolts (10mm? can't remember). Also the trunk "spring" might need to be moved, due to the weight of the spoiler now added to the truck lid. Look at the trunk hinge, both sides, there is a bar and a couple of notches in it. (I can't remember how to do it or what position it goes to). On my Gen 3 LE, the wiring exits the left side of the trunk, right near the trunk hinge. You may look at the main wiring harness in that area to see if the wiring is there. Peel back the covering to look for the wires. My color code was red and the other wire white with black stripe. It will be small gauge wire. Take some pictures of the other Camry and compare the inside of the truck lid to yours. I do have the mounting instructions for just the brake light in the spoiler for a Gen 3/4 Camry. You can read it and it may give you some ideas in what to look for in the wiring and mounting. The instructions do not show how to mount the spoiler. You may try the dealer for a copy of the spoiler mounting instructions. PM me if you are interested in looking at the instructions. Include an email address and I will send them to you.

Don't glue a spoiler down, its going to blow off, either drill it, or don't bother.
The spoiler isn't necessary, but if it's a must (i know for some it is) just drill out the trunk lid, it will be secure, use washers to cover up the hole w/ some silicone sealent, and thats it.

Its not going to be worthwhile to just glue/tape it down. I have only seen that work moderately with the lip spoilers, because they are lower profile & much lighter, but those too still blow off.
