1999 camry radio almost works

the maw-in-laws 1999 camry radio turns on, but doesn't produce any sound other than a 'pop' or so while pushing the volume knob.

it does produce a little bit of crunch crunch when the volume is turned to full.

lights work
channels / tuning works
presets work

just no sound, you know the one thing radios are supposed to accomplish.

maybe there is an external amp or known issue on a xle 1999 ?

ok, alternative solution - where to find a STOCK camry radio for this year model that won't cost an arm and a leg ?

thanks

I believe the XLE's have an external amp. I think either under the passenger seat or in the passenger side kick panel.

Ebay is a good place for parts.

The LE's amp is next to the passenger airbag. Remove the stock radio and follow the wire, and you'll find it.Try removing that, and bypassing it.
