3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 1992 Camry with 54,000 miles on it. When it came to me two years ago, it only had 38,000 miles and has been quite a wonderful car.
Recently it has developed problems. When I start it, it chokes out and dies, and I have to start it again while really revving up the engine with the gas pedal for about 20 seconds after I've started it to keep the engine from dying again. While I'm gasing it, it shakes and you can tell it really wants to die out again.
This doesn't happen every time, but about every other time it happens. I used to think it had something to do with the weather, since it only seemed to happen after the weather would warm up to over 45 degrees. When it was super cold, like in the 20's, it would start fine. Then there'd be a warm up in the weather, and the car wouldn't want to start. But today, in cold 30 degree weather, it died when I started it. That was a disappointing first.
It doesn't die when coming to a stop after running it, as when coming to a stopsign. It doesn't shake and jerk going down the road either.
Another thing that happens only 30% of the time, is that when the car is started, there is a grumbling noise in back of it, on the side opposite the gas tank. The sound dissipates after maybe 5 seconds of being started.
Does anyone know what this sounds like? I'm going to take it in, but before I do it would be nice to have some idea of what is going on so I don't get the run-around.
Thank you sincerely for any help any of you may have to offer,
angela
The sound of starting it and then it dying sounds like your IAC needs to be replaced. I dont know what engine you have, but my 4 cylinder is notorious for having a stuck butterfly valve every year if its not maintained. Before you bring it in, try cleaning the throttlebody:
The most common cause of this is a dirty idle air control valve. Clean the throttle body referring to the link bdy0003 suggested and spray the cleaner liberally down in to the hole marked "hole for I.A.C." Let the cleaner soak down there while you go on to clean the rest of the throttle body. Hopefully this willl solve your problem.
Possibly the starting problem is the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT), although yours aren't classic symptoms. I agree with the other two posters -- cleaning the throttle body and IAC would be a real good first step.
The grumbling sounds like maybe a small hole in the exhaust system. Not much else on that side of the car to make a noise while sitting still.
