im wondering if i bought this what would i have to do with it to make it run hid or are these just a upgraded look can i only run halogens in it safely. anyone know about these headlights?
Those headlights will look like this running:
That's without HID bulbs. You COULD put HID bulbs in them, and get this look though:
the pictures of my old camry (green) are running 4300k HID blubs in the same reflector set up as the housings you are looking at for your 2001 camry. Legal? I think it depends on the state. I'm in VA and 4300k isn't very blue...so I never got stopped. Hope that helps.

^ I'm saying the color has to do with getting caught. Not that i'm advising do anything illegal. I don't wanna turn this into a debate/thread jack, but don't the laws vary from state to state? I'm not sure this has been covered on here....

Yeah, don't wanna debate too much. Basically you can get caught for blue headlights, anything above 6000k I believe is too blue. And using HID in halogen housings, because of the extreme amounts of glare it causes to other drivers.
The only way to use HID legally is to retrofit projectors. So Marcluv, you can either stick with halogen and get that housing that tcam01 posted or you can retrofit if you really want to use HID and keep your current headlights.
optimally, go with projectors like iovaykind has done. although, HIDs do semi-okay in hallogen reflectors....with A LOT OF GLARE....like you said.

There's a lot to be learned with retrofitting and I suggest doing a search on google or checking out some youtube videos. You basically buy projectors from other cars, and then you put them into your halogen reflective housing. The reason is that because projectors have a cutoff line, any light [with HID which will be a lot of light] will only light up the ground in front of your car up to a certain point, without blinding oncoming drivers.
TCam01 you don't have to make any modification to put HID's in the aftermarket or stock housing. It'll still work, but you may or may not end up with a lot of glare depending on the headlight housing. I have 6000K HID's in my stock headlights and several friends said the glare isn't bad at all. I haven't been flashed once and I've had them for about 3 weeks now. I'm considering doing a projector retrofit, depending on how much time/money I can allocate for the project.
Yeah if you could find it and you want to pay for it of course you could. And make sure the projector is HID kit ready, some aren't and will still cause glare. That's why people choose to retrofit, its the same price for better quality but you spend a lot of time on it.
