My battery died, so I recharged it. I tested for a current drain and found there were about 500mA disappearing. After pulling the fuse circled in red, the drain droped to ~2mA. Unfortunately the manual I have doesn't show the relay box this fuse is in. I'm a bit leery of trying to start the car with this fuse missing.
Sorry, I've tried to attach a pic, but no joy. Here is the link though
it's for the Dome........... this fuse also is in the radio and clock circuits. The radio has an alarm, so it's always on as is the clock. I guess that what the drain is.
Although my battery is only 28 months old, my suspicion is that is is knackered. I'll leave it unattached overnight and check the voltage

Don't be so quick to blame the battery. An auto battery is good for very, very roughly 100 amp-hours (but they're not deep cycle batteries, so they're not going to appreciate being drawn down very far), so 500mA is going to completely discharge that sucker in roughly a week, and make it useless for starting long before that. That's obscene -- the standby electronics should draw somewhere between a tenth and hundreth of that.
The clock(at least it's display) should shut off when you turn the key to the OFF position. Since you say it's staying on, there's something wrong with the wiring somewhere.

I awoke in the middle of the night................. I had installed an after-market car alarm which quit ages ago. I'd pulled the wires from the klaxon which had gone ballistic after my previous battery had failed.
After pulling out a lot of wire (I don't seem to be able to get to the alarm itself), the current drain dropped to 8mA. Yes !!! So I charged up the battery. Next morning, all was OK. That evening the battery was down to 10V.
So, I replaced the battery which a test showed that had failed, but still had nearly a year on the warranty.
Thanks for all the help.
John
I found an old post that might be well to bear in mind. A fellow Toyotnationist found his dome light fixture was shorting with the roof of the car. A bit of insulation tape fixed it.
