96 Camry, engine light #2 cyl misfire

Prblems with misfire on #2 cyl of my 96 camry. It is 2.2 eng with automatic trans. The plug is sparking and when code is cleared will run for several minutes without engine light on. Then comes on with same code for misfire in #2 cyl. I was wondering if a bad fuel injector could be the reason? or looking for any help on this.

Thanks

Spark big and blue? Have you checked for arcing (in the dark, run engine and look for sparking from the plug wires -- helps to spray a light mist of water around the wires). If you compare the #2 and #4 plug ends (the ends that go in the engine), do they look different? If so, how? Pictures are always nice :-) When's the last time you replaced your distributor cap and rotor?

Injector is always a possibility, but short of outright failure, they're hard to diagnose without swapping with another cylinder and seeing if the misfire follows the injector (read: pain in the butt).

I have a cheap obd 2 scanner from harbor freight for $30, some time ago i brought it in to work for kicks and my work truck, ford ranger, displayed this same code. (I did not want to bother with finding and asking someone for the key to the locker where our scanners are locked up like fort knox, so i used my new toy instead.) I changed the spark plug and that fixed it.

Since it is only one cylinder, maybe that's the problem. If your engine uses the coil packs instead of a distributor, test the coil pack. If your engine does not use coil packs, suspect the plug wire - test the cable for resistance with a vom, if you dont have a vom, (volt ohmeter) swap the plug wire with another cylinder and see what it says now.

It could be the injector but wouldnt that throw its own code? If you exhaust the other two possibilities, swap the injector from one cylinder to another and see if the problem moves with it, if it does, i'd consider just getting another injector from a junkyard if you can - new injectors are expensive.

It could be the fuel injector. I had the same problem this week and it was the fuel injector. I was getting a misfire in cylinder #6. I replace the ignition coil that sits on top of the spark plug for cylinder #6 and I still got the misfire.
My local mechanic cleaned the fuel injector for cylinder #6 and the misfire went away. My car is actually driving like new. I always thought the slight vibration in my stearing wheel was normal until it disappeared after the injector was cleaned. I was actually browsing this site looking for instructions to remove and clean my fuel injectors. I can just image how well my 96 camry will drive if I clean the remaining 5 injectors.
