Had the same problem with lock on driver's door. I fixed it by myself. I disassembled the door, found the wires that come to the lock's motor. Then, I found the connector in the cabin that was behind the left kick-panel (in your case it might be right kick-panel, not sure). Using ohmmeter I found out which wire is broken (that was a black with green stripe one). Now the most difficult part - drag new wire through the rubber tube between door and cabin. I used a long knitting needle. I attached a new wire to one end of it and started from the cabin I pushed it into the rubber joint (or, how to call that rubber tube between door and cabin, where all the wires are located). Be careful and do not apply too much force. May use some non-aggressive lubricant on the needle to simplify the process. Once you can catch the other end in the door just drag it out completely and detach the needle. So now you have new wire in the place. Just connect both of its ends appropriately (to connector and to motor) and that is it. Took me several hours, but nothing too complicated.

When you press the button to lock/unlock the door, do you hear a mechanistic sound coming from the passenger door lock? Like it was some mechanical failure as opposed to an electrical failure?

Right, besides the wire problem it could be motor problem as well. I doubt, that mechanical problem exists here (meaning, electricity comes to motor, motor works but still doesn't lock: in this case even manual locking wouldn't work).
BTW, I assume, it doesn't lock regardless to which lock button is pressed - driver side or passenger side, correct?
It is pretty easy to check the motor. Just apply 12V on motor's contacts and it should work (or not). If it doesn't work this way then you need a new motor. Otherwise it is most likely a wire problem.

Well, then what would you say is the problem with my back passenger door lock? It doesn't lock/unlock automatically, when I press the button, but I do hear the sound of the mechanism. I think it twitches when I press the button though.

I'd say it is a motor. Still trying to lock but can't.
Well, ok, mechanical problem is also possible, if motor got disconnected from the handle, and the handle is still perfectly connected to the locking mechanism. But for me this sounds like almost impossible thing.
