3VZ throttle surge

93 camry V6 - 3VZ motor

engine is warm, I'll flip the TB open for a split second: revs up, drops down below idle, surges up above idle again. Sounds like a sticky IAC to me. Are these problematic in this car? Is there an easy fix?

Pretty much all of these rigs (including the 3VZ) that vent the PCV valve into the TB have problems with the TB, throttle plate, and IAC getting gunked up after a while. Cleaning the TB, the throttle plate (especially the edge) and the IAC port is usually worth trying.

Here's a DIY thread with pix showing how to remove and clean the IAC valve on the 3VZ-FE.

Link to thread

I did this a while back and it fixed a surging idle. I'd advise skipping steps 7 thru 9, though. Mine was pristine clean inside with adequate lube. The way it's sealed, I don't see how it could need to be opened up & cleaned/re-lubed.

In the picture in step 10, pay special attention to cleaning the valve area in the center. Get in there with a Q-tip or something to get all the gunk out. That's where it really matters. Mine was caked up really bad there.
