Drum Brake question

Does brake shoes in our Camry's ever wear down to metal?

I'm asking because earlier today I pulled the drums off to see where they were at and they looked to be a little more than 1/2 worn (or more maybe). So I cleaned off everything with a can of cleaner and a rag and put everything back together. Both sides I could hear the shoe touch just barely with no resistance at all so I didn't adjust them. (let me know if that's wrong)

Now I just noticed the parking brake has little resistance on the wheels. I pull it up tight and I can still move idling.
Is it possible for the shoes to have worn past the point where they cannot stop?

you need to adjust the parking brake, pull the center console. you see the cable there with the double nuts holding it in place, tighten up and your good to go.

The Camrys are so front-heavy that the rear brakes hardly do any work (which is why putting rear disc brakes on a Camry is ridiculous from a braking point of view). The rear pads are good for 200K miles, easy.

Your parking brake just needs to be adjusted. What year is your rig?

You're talking about the drum brakes and not the drum-in-disc, right?

The rear drum brakes are self adjusting. So if you cleaned and lubed them properly, repeated pulling on the parking brake lever will cause them to self adjust to the proper gaps. And the car shouldn't move within the specified number of clicks on the lever.

The drum-in-disc parking brake you need to manually adjust it.

So you cleaned it but did you lube it?

With them on the stands, you can check to see if a rear wheel turns with/without parking brake. Check this after repeated applying the parking brake to help them self adjust.

They are the normal drums. Yes I put some grease on the 6 points and little where I could on the self adjuster. I will check that tomorrow. With it adjusted to where the the shoe barely dragged I was expecting it to have enough pressure at that point to stop the car.
I was wondering if it is possible to have it adjusted out to the max with still some padding on the shoe. I wasn't paying attention to how far it was extended but I was just curious if I happened to have cleaned off the last bits that gave it some stopping power.

to your original question, yes, its possible to wear the brake shoe down to the metal base. i replaced my shoes not too long ago because it was just about to reach the metal backing. sounds like yours just need adjusting. pull up firmly several times on the parking brake handle. you should feel resistance. if you dont, keep pulling. at least on my car, the parking brake is strong enough to stop the car when rolling in drive then hold the car still.

FWIW, the parking brake and drum brake adjustment procedures are available at www.camrystuff.com , Generation 4, Brake section, starting at page 8.

Try this. Take the drums back off and adjust the stars tighter until it's much harder to get the drums back on. Make sure the cable where it goes into the drums is clean. Also probably a good idea to clean and lube the stars too.

Edit to add:

Ghettosled is also correct. It's worth a try to repeatedly pull up and down on the parking brake. It that does not help then probably the stars are stuck and cannot auto adjust.

The wheels locked right up with them on the stands. So I tightened the brake lever from 10 clicks to 6-7. Pulled the drums back off and checked the adjusters to make sure they could move. Tightened them up against the drums a bit more.
So now it will sluggishly stop the car from going forward but it can still reverse with it on just idling.
Looking at the shoes for the 3rd time I noticed the top does have more meat than the bottom. So looks like ill be replacing them anyway.
