Odometer problem

I've got a 96 Camry 2.2L.

My odometer is registering 1.6 miles for every 1 mile I drive. I checked this with a GPS unit I have and drove at exact 60 miles an hour for exactly 1 minute. The odometer increased by 1.6 miles. The speedometer was within a few MPH of the GPS.

Any idea of what might be wrong?

Hmmmm. Sounds like the odo thinks it's doing kilometers instead of miles.

Offhand, I'm not sure how to fix the problem, 'tho.

So your saying if you went on a 50 mile trip your odometer will say 83 miles?
Or if you went on a 50 mile trip the odometer says 50.6?

My once i reach 45 MPH speedo is usually 3-6 MPH faster than it should be and it sounds like thats the norm for these vehicles.

Check out this thread Speedometer a little fast?

1 mi = 1.609 km

Sounds like you have a metric odometer.

Are you sure it's not your GPS fooling you?

I would trust your odometer before the GPS.

Here's the thing that got me to wondering what was going on... I was checking my gas mileage and it kept increasing till I was getting something like 45 miles to a gallon... That's when the odometer became suspect... That's when I did the GPS test, which I did in my other car as well... The other car did exactly 1 mile after driving for 1 minute at 60 MPH.

Bringing this thread back from the dead:

My car's been doing the same thing for awhile now and I never thought to look up why.. does anyone else have this problem and had it fixed? It seems that something in the car's computer changed it to kilometers but the speedometer still runs in MPH.. shrugs

I bought a dash on flea bay and I'm getting ready to put it in... It was under 20 bucks... I'll let you know if that cures the problem....

I don't think the dash is the problem, it definitely has to do with electronics as a jump from miles to kilometers either has to do with gearing or electronics.

Wish you luck though
