camry 2002 V6 transmission trouble

hi everyone, i have a V6 camry 2002.

when i bought the car 4 years ago and i first tested it and i put it in reverse it kinda made this wired jump backwards together with some nasty noise, i didn't mind too much about it, i thought i hit the gas too hard.
it did it a couple of times again over the years but that was about it.

now just a few weeks ago all of a sudden i started to hear this metal scratching noise from inside the tranny.

the car kept running until i went into town the other day, stopped at the gas station, and when i wanted to leave i put into gear and nothing happens.
i turned it off, changed into all gears etc, and all of a sudden it ran again for about 1 km. then i slowly lost power, until it slowly came to a stop.

i had the engine running and could shift between all gears, and the car would move.
after 5 min i turn the car back on again and i barely made it home, but i felt it was losing power again, at the parking lot again i had lost all gears.

now the car starts, runs for a few meters and starts to loose power until it stops. In the moment it looses power, i rev up the engine to keep up the speed, which helps but only for very little.

the metal sound from inside the tranny appears in all gears, when i rev up the engine it gets louder.

i hope i described as best as possible i appreciate any help.

Mostly likely your tranny is toast -- metallic noises from the tranny Are Not A Good Thing.

However, check your tranny fluid level. While I've never run across a tranny where fluid levels caused metallic noises, there's always the first time.

my mechanic suggest that it may be the torque converter, what do you think about that.

the oil has been changed a year ago, and still looks and smells good

Not trying to be an asshole, but it doesn't really make much difference if it's the torque converter, the pump, or the framistat. It pretty much comes down to "do you want to pay $1000-$1500 to have the tranny pulled and rebuilt or replaced?", 'cause it doesn't sound like anything that can be fixed without pulling the tranny. Bummer that.

as i live in the Dominican Republic and the guys here can pretty much repair anything, and i know you can get a used torque converter for around 100 bucks i would like to figure out what the exact problem could be as i will be taking out the tranny myself together with a friend mechanic.

Quebec's in the Dominican Republic? Damn, I knew I shouldn't have slept through Geography class.

A lot of the symptoms point to low fluid pressure. Could be the TC or the pump. That metallic noise stuff bothers me a bit, 'tho -- I'd want to open it up and take a look around before shopping for parts.

iam in fact in the DR, and im german, not canadian.

just looked at a used 2002 v6 transmission with torque converter for about 300 US, 30 days guarantee

if the noise wouldn't be i would have just changed the oil and see what happens, but that damn noise is just very concerning, it does seem to come from the upper part of the tranny, close to the starter, it is not very loud, just seems to be constantly there, and gets higher in pitch when i rev up the engine.

If you don't mind working on your back, then the following DIY on a swap can offer some pointers. The engine will have to be supported, preferably by a 3-point engine support bar. You'll need to make alignment marks between the engine cradle and chassis because this can affect your wheel alignment.

Replace the rear main seal on the engine while at it. Maybe reseal the harder to reach surfaces while exhaust pipes are off.

how much metal dust would you consider acceptable to normal on the two magnets inside the tranny cover ?

If the tranny's in good condition and the pan has never been dropped & cleaned, then "normal" is pretty much a uniform layer of grey goo all over the bottom of the pan, with no obvious extra amounts on the magnets. If you can see obvious metallic splinters on the magnets, there's a problem.

thanks a lot to all you guys, you been very helpful,

the car was actually made 2001 but i guess it goes under the 2002 as it is the newer chasis.

i do have a considerable amount of metall splinters on both magnets, so i will just try to get a new tranny

exept that i must say the car has been great, nice power etc. but apparently the transmission seems to be a major issue, that seems to happen very often, too bad, i have to pay for it.
