Studded Tires Advice MN/Wisc/Mich Users!!

Story: Bought my first 93 camry from my aunt who lived in colorado (where studded tires are legal). She bought a set of studded tires, but since she lives in Denver where it doesn't really snow much, she used the set for little more than a few weeks before taking them off. I still have the set of near new tires (not on rims though, just sitting making fun of the piles and piles of snow outside.

In Minn and a several other midwest states studded tires are illegal for residents. I realize that studded tires are hard on the roads that already take a beating, however, if there is anywhere in the world that should allow studded tires its the midwest where we often have ice just as often as snow in the winter. I know that the new winter tire compounds are like driving on rails, but if i had enough cash for those i wouldn't be driving yoshi-car.

Question: HOW loud are studs to other cars, and how noticeable are they to other drivers. I have seen a few Minnesota drivers with them on in parking lots and gas stations, but not many. Think I would be stupid to try my luck and just mount them for a few months? I hate seeing brand new tires sit in our barn unused.

They're loud enough to be quite noticeable. If the car rolling beside me on a city street (without snow on it) has them, I can hear it with my windows shut.
