Idle and exhaust issues..

I'm having a few issues here, for one thing my idle is a tad too high around 1000 or more at times, and no matter how much I try to adjust the throttle position screw it just won't go down. So I'm thinking throttle position sensor or map sensor maybe? It's a 92 2.2 btw. I checked for vacuum leaks but I might need to just KEEP CHECKING. Another issue I'm having is popping coming from my exhaust or backfire I assume. The car has already undergone an extensive tune-up and has perf intake and exhaust. Some punk teenagers drove by me saying it sounds "horrible". I double checked the timing and everything so I'm wondering what can I do to eliminate this problem? Also I have another question. When I was adjusting my timing recently I got the hell shocked out of me by one of the wires on the tip of the distributor cap. Now from what I understand they aren't supposed to do that but it has all brand new plugs/wires/dis. cap+rotor and I triple checked 2 make sure it's installed properly how in the hell could it be faulty?

In regards to your idle, when your car is cold, the engine idles higher to warm the engine up. When its over 1000, vacuum leaks maybe the issue as you mentioned. Also, did you somehow screw up your timing?

Yea it doesn't matter if the engines warm or not the idles always high. But I've got a timing light so I know the timings right. The backfire is only occasional though, it's not constant. And one thing I forgot to mention is that the car kinda lags a bit whenever it backfires, but likewise not all the time. The cars tempermantal, it's weird

I've had the pee shocked out of me by good wires -- given the voltage going through those wires, it doesn't take much leakage to set you on your ass. As long as you're not seeing arcing at night, I wouldn't sweat it.

Why were you setting the timing? Did you jump the DLC test connector while you did so?

Have you checked out the EGR circuit? A bit of leakage through that at idle would act like a vacuum leak, and you can get some interesting exhaust noise if the EGR is open at the wrong time.

I pulled the distributor out to replace the o-ring and had to reset the timing but yea I followed the manual and jumped e1 and t1 at the diagnostics thing. So your talking about the egr valve itself or the other round thing next to it? lol
