Camry 01 Turn Signal working intermittenly.help

My camry 2001 turn signal switch stop working all the time when I press down (left turn), I can hear a buzzing sound (like the sound when you activate the turn switch but the sound would remain on, since it does not engage the turn signal) when I do that. I brought to a repair shop, they told me that the turn switch component (the one inside the steering wheel hub) need to replace. and it can cost anywhere from $200 to $700. so I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem before, and whether they bought the part and fixed it themselves (if it is doable, I would like to do that) or how much would it cost for repair?

and does anyone know what that turn signal stalk thing is called? I tried to find the part online, but I dont know which category it belongs to or what it is called.. Thanks!

I know on other cars its called the combination switch. The entire assembly controls turn signal, lights, bright-dim, wipers and sometimes cruse control. Which explains the cost. Iv never worked on one for a Camry though so I cant say for sure.

My 97 turn signal does the same thing mainly on a right turn, but now starting to do it on both right and left. I plan on replacing it this spring when it gets warmer out. I will have to read up on replacement in the chiltons and fsm.
