You can try to clean the Egr instead of replacing.

Assuming you've got a 5S-FE (4-banger), EGR R&R is effectively the same for the Gen4 and Gen3. Like buci said, you should try just cleaning the carbon out of the EGR first -- the EGR valve itself is pretty tough (some of the vacuum valves controlling it are a mite touchy, 'tho).

BE SURE TO INSPECT AND CLEAN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WHERE THE EGR IS MOUNTED.. I did the EGR on a 1MZ-FE and the port in the manifold was almost compleatly closed with carbon and soot..

Hmmm. I wouldn't go under the car, personally. For me, it's easier to pop off the air cleaner & intake hose, undo the compression fitting where the tube exits the block (coming in from down and to the right of the distributor -- good access with the intake hose out) with a 24mm wrench and then remove the two bolts holding on the EGR valve itself. Then remove the hoses to the EGR valve and the connector for the EGR temperature sensor and carefully pull the EGR valve and tube more-or-less straight up. Half hour to pull if you've done it before and nothings rusted. Allow an hour the first time. If things are rusty, it gets a bit open-ended.

Clean out the carbon in the valve and in the plenum opening where the valve connects.

When you reinstall the EGR, you normally want to use a new gasket, although in my experience the old one is usually in fine shape.
