3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The factory fill is clear, and will get honey or coffee colored over time. You can buy clear "PS fluid", but garden-variety ATF works just as well. Only downside is if you have a leak of reddish fluid, now you have to figure out if it's the PS or the AT.
Maybe it's just plain power steering fluid they put in at the factory. Unless like Hill said, some (US production?) were filled with red Dexron.
Instead of dino Dexron, get a bottle of synthetic blend Walmart SuperTech D-III ($3.77, not the older dino $2.77 stuff). Or if your store still has SuperTech Mercon-V that's compatible with D-III (read label on back), use it. Do not use the thin Dexron VI.
You might want to do a complete flush if you haven't touched it before. Then you can pump out the fluid in the reservoir and just refill it once a year to help remove the wear particles.
dont say no to me. you assume someone put the wrong fluid in it. i assume it has the correct fluid but it is old and out of spec. shuold be red when new.
your p/s fluid is bad. change immediately, using dexron mercon
He's right. ( i dont know it Merocn is the recommended fluid doesnt it say on the dipstick/owners manual?) and it is easy to do.
All you need is some fluid, empty containers to put the old g ook, and a 99 cent turkey baster. It's a bit tedious but definitely easier and safer then disconnecting hoses to flush the P/S fluid.
Here is all there is to it, with engine off, suck out your reservoir with the turkey baster (i had to add a piece of tubing to make mine make it through the hole in the reservoir) and refill. run engine for 30 seconds - 1 minute. shut off engine. repeat. when this gets old, or after maybe 5 or 6 times doing this, clean up and put everything away and repeat whole process once more.
The fluid ought to be coming out clean after doing this twice - (and you don't have to worry about leaks that weren't there before - because you didn't disconnect any hoses, just to flush your P/S!)

red fluid turns dark when it gets old. not golden. you assume alot yourself and frankly neither of us have seen it. Std p/s fluid will work in the system and my guess is that is what is in there. The op should get it flushed out and replace with dex/merc if he is in doubt of the correct fluid.
there are so many disinfo agents on this site it/s not even funny. not even half the people that reply know actually what the answer is. stop being clif clavens from cheers you morons.
