it only costs 5-10 dollars a rim to get your tire taken off an put back on, i recommend getting the tires taken off do all of your base coats, get the tire put back on and do a final coal/ clear or what ever finish you are doing.

coat your tires with oil, spray away, wait for paint to dry, wash away oil. =)

or you could be all fancy and use painters tape...

Oil is a great idea. I feel like it'd be hard to not get some on the rims though, and that = missing patches.

Personally I'd tape that shit up haha. But not with painters tape....too expensive!

don't worry too much about the paint sticking- .. here's a little diy i did last year on painting wheels.

first mod of 2009!!- wheels! pics inside..

if yr wheels are in pretty good shape, just grab some primer and get to work. 3/4 of the job is prep- so take yr time.

if you want good looking rims for a long time do not be cheap. I have a sand blaster so when i do wheels i sand blast them, do some sanding, primer/filler, sand, and then throw on paint, get them mounted do any touch up i need to do then finish coat and ur done.

wide painters tape.. wal mart

And for steelies, i'd do light scuffings... they're steelies..

but for some other precious wheels, i'd do more than scuffing.
