Gen 4 Electrical Problem

First of all I have a question about jumping the car. Is it right to hook up one of the cables to the frame and the other to the battery when jumping my battery? My friend did so and inside the cabin there was smoke and it smelled like an electrical fire. After that happened i got a new battery and my headlight and a couple lights on the dashboard don't work anymore.

This all happened about a month ago and the car has been working fine until 2 days ago when I tried starting the car. What happened is the head light inside worked when i opened the door; but when I tried starting the car, everything turned off when the key got to the ignition part. Now i just waited outside of the car wondering what to do when the head light turned on again. This time I put the key in the Alt position for a minute, then turned the key the rest of the way and it worked (luckily). I drove 20 miles to my house and it has been there since. None of the lights will turn on now :<

It would be great if I could get some help on what might be wrong. Thanks.

no idea about the smoke but he did hook it up right provided it was the ground line to the frame.

sounds like a loose battery terminal make sure everything nice and tight and try again
