3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ive been reading, and reading, and reading on how to pep up the step of my 93 v6. First off i cannot believe that for such a popular car there is so little after market for the engine, i cannot find any headder, intake, etc. Now i hear people say get the car tuned, what do you mean? are you guys going to race shops and getting a more aggressive tune? are you doing the things in the DIY thread and calling that the tune? im looking for a bit more info.
well for one these cars are not popular with people who mod cars, they are not exactly a good platform for such a job and just didnt end up big in the modding scene.
when we say tuning were talking about buying a piggy back tuner like SAFC2 or something liek that and having a tuning shop play with it to get the optimal AF mix. ive herd that a tune on the 3vz can free up 15-20hp not sure if that was including other exhaust and intake mods though.
i hear that there is a certain y pipe on ebay that is better then stock, is this true? a member was kind enough to link me to it and if it has proven gains id buy it.
they will both improve flow but the OBX style has equal legnth tubing resulting in a "better" sound and equal performance from both banks of the motor (but the difference is very small).
OP I asked JP awhile back if they'd make headers/y-pipe for the 3vz but it was basically group buy only and people just arent interested. so knock on some doors and somebody might knock back.

what modification is needed for either of those set ups? im looking for something that is as close to a bolt on as possible. the custom work is for my other car not this one
the 3vz is not a top end engine, those headers look nice and shiney but they wont do much compared to the stock manifolds.
Take it to a good performance oriented exhaust shop and have them make you a custom y pipe from the factory one, thats what i did and it was like 90 bucks. Great upgrade since the factory y is very narrow going into the cat. As for tuning you can either go with a piggyback like what has been said already or play around with the afm spring tensioner to try and learn it out some, but you shouldnt do that unless your comfortable with messing the air fuel ration up and having to fix it yourself.

the most restrictive parts are the Y collector, and the tubing between that and the cat. get that worked out and youll noticea differance. as was mentioned, the headers you dont really need to worry about. they dont do much unless boosted.
there was also an intake mod that Toysrme came up with (originally posted on ClubLex, search my old nitro-meth thread and it pops up in there)
I also believe there was a mod to the ACIS system, and for manual, how to mount a gen4 shortshifter...
Of course, I'm still saving $$$ for wheels & tires, followed by LSD (to control the already retarded amount of torque), and then some TURBO badges to top it all off (maybe even with a real turbo mounted )
