3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
After having my baby alive for only 2 short months since the swap, today I bring you all bad news.
Going around a corner from a stop at an intersection I was about to shift to 2nd when there was a loud clank and then a lot of grinding. The nose end of the car was diving deep and I think the axle I replaced yesterday had broken somehow.
I was only going about 20 mph so I pulled over and as soon as I do, the engine shuts itself off. I pop the hood and smoke is bellowing out everywhere and I can see oil covering EVERYTHING. I couldn't tell where it was coming from so I called my dad (only a block away from home at the time) to come help. When he gets there, we noticed a quarter sized hole on the side of the block, right behind the exhaust flange. We towed it home but couldn't park it where we wanted it to be, out of the way. So I cranked it up, and the poor baby still had the heart to start up and keep clunking and chugging and trying her hardest. It was the most god awful noise I could ever hear come from my car as I backed her next to my other bone-camry. Pools and trails of oil were left from the scene all the way back to my driveway.
Now that the story's over, should I get a block and rebuild it with forged internals (plus new clutch and flywheel and rebuilt trans)? Or should I just buy another car? My budget is $5000 and I feel like a car under $5k is just gonna have too much wrong with it to be worth it. plussss all the work I did on my camry this past winter, I'd like to see it last. If I went the forged internals route, I would definitely have a good platform for a turbo which was my next planned mod for the summer. Good thing I didn't, I guess this poor engine couldn't handle much more.
Theres definitely the option of building another engine, but that probably gonna run 2500+ said and done including a different trans etc.
How many miles were on it?
If you've put minimal money into this it might be wise to just part it out and take it as a learning experience. If you can break even or even profit you'll only lose the time you've put it. But its up to you. If the body and suspension arent bad its worth it, but well itll still be a camry at the end of it all.
wow man, sorry to hear. want a supercharged V6 5 speed solara for 3k?
since you now have experiance with it it may be a better use of money to just replace the motor and trans and know that its all good.
i wonder what happened.
I'm thinking about that solara...and then swapping the engine into the cam....
hmmmm.....
But yeah, I'm definitely gonna rebuild the motor since I found a block for $50 on craigslist. I don't want to buy a used motor.
I want to make my own brand new one!
But I think the oil pump crapped out...and then threw a rod.
Should have replaced the pump when I did every other possible thing...
Oh well.
I'm definitely going for a total rebuild. Trans is going to a shop to get rebuilt, new clutch, fidanza flywheel. Forged internals. port and polish. What else am I forgetting?

Oh yeah, turbo
Have you considered swapping in a v6? Might be a little bit more fun. You would also basically be at 5sfe turbo hp without a turbo. Along with a turbo you would need better fuel delivery, brakes and alll that fun stuff. Beefed up tranny too.
Make sure the blocks alright before you start building it. It would suck to have everything together and then have a micro crack somewhere in it.
When I first posted this I was expecting a lot of "ugh, another thread about a destroyed camry " but everyone's comments on keeping it and rebuilding it really picks me up. I'm very emotionally attached to this car, and as much as I hate to admit this, I cried a little while I sat on the side of the road looking at the engine I just finished rebuilding have a hole in it...

that is EXACTLY why you have to fix her up. Think of it as a sign from the car gods that you should throw in a nice v6/5speed combo

Need performance parts?
Shoot me a PM, I'll see what I can do
popped up on ebay.. so i can't buy it. You buy it, do the work and forget about seeing her on the side of the road again. We don't learn without a heart break- im emotionally attached to my car too.. a gentleman a few days ago offered me $8,000 cash for my camry, i turned him away. Even though i have a gen 5 and a tC.. this girl's mine because I put all the work into and this car is my get away from reality whenever shit hits the fan.
Don't look at this as something bad, look at it as another chance to get better! .. hell- buy that set up and sell the supercharger for 2,000 and the tranny for 300.. but idk- don't give up just yet.
