hard shift to reverse

i have a 1996 camry XLE, V6 3.0, automatic, 246k im just wondering if anyone else has this same problem

no matter if its cold or warm outside i have this hard shift, clunk that you can feel from any position in to reverse. ive been told it could be some sort of piston on the bottom side of the tranny but before i break in to this beast i wanted some oppinions.

Besides the accumulator piston you mentinoed, how are the engine mounts (including "dog bone")? If you've never changed them in 246K miles, they may need to be. Check the dog bone on the passenger side near the strut mount. Do you see cracks in the rubber?

Sounds like engine mounts. Replace them.

I have a similar problem. Its not an extremely hard slam, but its definitely a jolt when shifting through gears. My top dog bone is totally worn out. I would look into replacing motor mounts before you start tearing apart the transmission.

yes i have replace the "dog bone" and that didnt change anything. also had other mounts checked and they "said" they were all fine just needed some tightening which was done.
also is getting that piston replaced an easy fix. someone said i had to remove some gear box on the bottom side of the tranny and its right there

You can always do a double check. Have someone shift and you observe the movement of the engine. Exercise necessary caution.

o, ok, so if the engine shakes vilontly then its a mount, otherwise its the transmission right? (by the way my whloe kind or jerk really hard when shifted to reverse!).

Your idle RPM should not be too high either.

You should see the engine move a little bit without clunking. If it looks like it's going to jump out at you then double check the mounts. Or compare to a friend's Camry.

rpm's not high. and ive seen the shifting with me watching the motor and it moves a lil bit but not as much as it feels when your actually in the car. and mounts are fine and just so you know its a CLUNK that you can hear and feel.
dont know what else it could be

Brake torque it in drive and then reverse with a friend watching the engine for excessive movement.

Put a garden hose to the transmission and shift. See if you can pin point the noise to the transmission. Then try again with the hose against the differential. Be careful of moving engine parts.

ok so today i talked with a tranny shop and they are seeming to thing its something to do with high and low presure..... i was also informed by this shop that my tranny DOES NOT HAVE THAT PISTON..... so im kinda confused bc one shop said it has it and then this one said it doesnt! also the guy said there is no point in fixing the presure deal... and just have it rebuilt! $1,295 is what he quoted me..... but at 247k is it really worth the money?

ya man same here!! everything is like perfect except for the reversing shake. OYA!! I forgot, few months ago I changed the transmission oil (my parents never changed it before the hand over, kinda explains the condition of the transmission -.-), and poured a whole bottle of LUCAS TRANSMISSION FIX, it like helped ALOTTTT, no kidding. I only feel the shaking SOMETIMES, but its not as hard, more smooth, You should try that!!!
