Question Coolant Temp Gauge goes cold when moving

Hello All,

I have a 2001 Camry with the 2.2 4CYl. I noticed that the Coolant Temp gauge when at idle will stay a little under the half mark like it always does. But when I am moving it would drop all the way down to cold. Until I am at a stop for a good amount of time. Could this be a stuck thermostat? Thanks in advance.

It most likely is a stuck thermostat. It's probably stuck in the open position. I would change it. For Toyota thermostats I prefer to use Toyota OEM thermostats. If using a Toyota OEM thermostat, remember to install the thermostat with the little bypass hole at the 12:00 position.

Hi Mike,

Thank you very much for your help and tip. I will go ahead and replace it since it's a cheap fix and see what happens.

When the engine/cooling system is cold. Remove the rad cap. Is the radiator full? Or do you have air in there?

When you change out the thermostat, also get a new gasket. Use OEM parts for these. I never saw a good aftermarket thermostat for domestic or imports.

Also consider changing out the radiator cap. No problems with aftermarket Stants here however.

If you need to fill the coolant, use toyota Red and distilled water only.
