Where you putting a gps on a 93 Camry besides the windshield?

Hey Guys,

Apparently now thiefs are stealing GPS's and breaking into cars because they see the suction cup on the windshield and on top of the dash.

I wonder if anyone has found a place to put it that can be easly taken off. I heard of putting them in front of the vent but the vents don't turn off, I don't think its such a great idea. (the heat or the AC)

Any pointers? Thanks kindly

Liam

You could set it in the cupholder or even in your lap while you're using it. When you're not using it, throw it in the glovebox.

i've not had a problem yet with my suction cup on the windshield, but i never have my gps in the car unless i don't know where i'm going. Would probably be a good idea to take the suction cup off unless i'm using it...

I was considering fabricating a mount to go in the slot under my radio (aftermarket head unit) and tucking the wire for a smoother look, but that's about the only other place I can think of.

Let us know if you figure out a good place!

I just take the mount off and throw it in the glovebox when I'm not using the GPS. Putting the GPS itself away and leaving the suction cup on isn't enough. Thieves aren't that stupid...they know you just threw the unit in the glovebox.

What he said. I had a family friend's car broken into because he left the mount on the windshield, even thought the GPS itself was in his pocket at the time... I know it's a PITA to remove it every time you use it, but I tink it's better than coughing up a couple hundred dollars for a broken window and whatever else the thief decides to do...

i use a vent mount which keeps things pretty stealthy. I am planning on seeing if I can hardwire it somehow sometime soon

But dosen't putting that in front of the vent expose it to the heating or AC and dosen't that affect the speaker and unit?

It does expose it to the heating and air conditioning but I have not had a problem so far. It definitely does not effect the speaker unit in any way and I don't think it effects the unit greatly because of how the mount is designed. The actual clamp part takes the brute of the heating/air conditioning and then there is the actual cradle part that locks into the clamp. The cradle covers the entire back of the GPS unit so it takes whatever remaining flow onto itself. I am sure there is some temperature change that the actual unit receives but it is most likely minor. I chose to mount it in center console vents above the stereo using the right vent so as not to obstruct the clock at all. I think by placing it here, the complementing left vent will flow more to compensate for any back pressure. Looks great and since my GPS unit is all black, it flows well with the all black center console.
