'94 Camry Electrical Problems

My Camry has some electrical issues and I am looking for some advice on where to begin the troubleshooting. The issue is related to the brake stop switch and the gear position switch perhaps. What happens is when I press the brake pedal the "R" indicator on the combination panel lights up. Also at the same time the back-up lights dim to off. If the brake pedal is not depressed the back-up lights in the rear work fine. Grounding issues? Any ideas. I have full factory wiring manual so I can track connection points down.

Thanks

Open up the loom of wires in the trunk by the driver's side trunk hinge. Those wires have a tendancy to frey and break over the years, as the trunk is constantly opened and closed, causing those wires to flex quite a bit. Repair any broken or freyed wires you find. Two wires in there may be touching each other causing the problem you are experiencing.
