Wellllll a few people were asking for updates so I figured I would make one these threads for those few people to watch my progress.
I just got back in town last night so today was my first chance to work on it. At 2 o'clock I started tearing the engine and transmission out.
At 4 o'clock it was sitting in my driveway, record time .
I decided to pack it in for the day, because I wanted to call some engine places before they closed at 5.
Most places I've talked to wanted around $2800 for a new engine. One place wants $4000. I found a guy who has a small business about 30 minutes from me and he wants $1400 for an engine rebuilt with rock auto products. I'm learning toward the $1400 engine for a few reasons. It's local. It's cheap. Free delivery. But why does he only want half the price everyone else wants?
In other news, I found a place to get my trans rebuilt CHEAP. My old auto shop teacher told me today he'll do it for $150
Tomorrow I'm pulling the trans off the engine and getting that ready to get rebuilt on Monday.
good news on the price. i personally couldnt tell ya the reason that shop only wants so little but i would look up their rating and see if they have had any problems in the past.
Thats not a bad deal. Did the other shop want 2800 for a completly new engine or a reman?
The guy for 1400 might not be doing the full shebang. Might just be honing the cylinders and putting on oversized rings, same with the head. I would talk to the guy about the details, but 1400 is still an alright deal even if he doesn't replace the pistons and valves. Might be a shortblock also ( only block no head or anything else, which is ok since you have your old engine)
Hmm have you looked into getting a pre 97 block and swapping on your own head? Might make things cheaper since im pretty sure the lower end stayed the same for all the years of the 5sfe.

That's for the 1MZ right? I remember reading you were contemplating V6...

Dayum! That's a steal compared to a transmission shop! Good Get!
$2800 would be reasonable if they install a Marshall or Jasper engine with 3-years/100K miles warranty. $4000 is out of touch.
The $1400 may be replacing rings, bearings, gaskets without any machining work.
And I guess $150 is done by students. Not bad if you get free parts.

The 1400 guy says new pistons, rings, rods, bearing, crankshaft and a clean head. I would assume the block is honed out... He uses rock auto parts.
I know it's a long block.
I went ahead and ordered it today, should be here Thursday

Jasper wanted around $3k for a reman. Didn't bother asking marshall.
The $150 is for the shop teacher doing it, just as a side job/favor for me as I always bought him breakfast last year, knowing I'd need a favor down the road.
that doesn't include parts though. I need to find a place to get blocker rings and other shit like that.
Today I pulled the tranny off. Boy that thing is so much lighter than the auto trans. I can actually pick it up!
Got the clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel off. Time for a new clutch and p plate for sure hahah. Flywheel miiiight need resurfacing
Anyway, as I was pulling the tranny bolt off the back side, I noticed a HUUUUUUUGE second hole in the back of the engine. It looks like a grenade went off inside the engine. I'll post pics later for sure, but DAMN.
Ordered the engine today. Tranny goes in on Monday and hopefully I'll have the parts by then.
Engine gets delivered Thursday so I can HOPEFULLY have this done by the time I have to go back to school on Sunday. All I get to do now is wait on other people....
Any recommendations for a clutch/tranny internals?
Today I found another hole in the engine. That brings it up to three holes in the block. I also found a crack in the oil pan. I pulled the pan and saw huge and I mean HUGE chunks of metal:
It's funny, if you look at the engine at the correct angle, you can see straight through all three holes and see daylight.
I looked up the engine and saw the crankshaft and where the rod would be. Also, whatever box thing is directly below the crankshaft is missing giant chunks, probably the ones pictured in the oil pan.
I took a bunch of pictures of all the broken stuff, but I'll upload them later.
haha. I have no idea man. I didn't suck in water because it was a bright and sunny day, no water anywhere around.
It never seemed to be worn at all. Maybe I didn't experience that engine's full potential, but when it ran it seemed pretty fast to me. It always handled everything I would throw at it.
Anyway, new engine on the way.
Does anyone know where I can buy the transmission synchros?
The only thing I found was a full rebuild kit with a bunch of crap I don't need for $500ish on eBay. All I need are the synchros.
Also, what does everyone suggest for a new clutch?
