4th Generation 99 Camry with a P0440 and another...

I have a beautiful 99 that has had the same check engine light for all of the colder season. the thing is, it only comes on when it's below 40 degrees F. I get the P0440 and another that says Evaporative Emissions Purge Valve Malfunction/Insufficient Flow.

Does this mean my valve is bad and needs to be replaced? I've had some trouble locating it. Where exactly is it and how do I replace it? I'm going to tap it with the end of a screwdriver to see if I can unjam the solenoid and have added some K100 to the fuel tank to see if I can get the moisture out. Any suggestions or help would be great.

The car has 209,000 miles with a beautiful rust-free body and I'm trying to keep it as long as possible. Thanks in advance!

Technical Description

Evaporative Emission System Malfunction
What does that mean?

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer fuctioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the.

Symptoms

You likely won't notice any drivability problems.

Causes

A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • The gas cap is not installed or working properly
  • The purge solenoid has failed
  • The canister is plugged and not working properly

Possible Solutions

With a P0440 OBD-II trouble, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:[LIST][*]Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.[*]Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses[*]Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid[*]Check and/or replace the sensor[*]Check and/or replace the purge valve[*]Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

Other EVAP DTCs: P0440- P0441- P0442- P0443- P0446- P0453- P0455- P0456

There is a vacuum switching valve(VSV) on the air filter housing. You'll see a rubber hose leading to the throttle body, and the other hose connects to one end of the evaporative system pipe.

That VSV probably needs cleaning (careful not to break the metal fingers or you'll need to buy a new one ~$50). This is not the correct picture, but looks like this:

You can temporarily pull the hose on the canister side and listen for repeated, loud sucking sounds the VSV makes as it opens to the vacuum on the throttle body side.

Ask a mechanically inclined friend or shop for help if needed.

I have already replaced that valve. The issue is not there. I also know what the codes mean I just need to know where to find the purge valve and how to replace it.

Here is a picture of two of the three vsv's on your car. The other vsv is the vapor pressure vsv and it is located on the charcoal canister. Hope this helps!!

Well i work at a dealership and it runs about 80 bucks here, but im sure you can find it cheaper some were. But that doesnt guarantee that going cheap is 1. going to fix it and 2. last. But good luck!!! whatever you do.
