1) Is it illegal to to ride on lower suspension? Will cops pull you over if its looks too low?

2) Is it illegal to have your front license plate off the the left or right?

Asking from Cali SGV
Police here are hella strict.
Just wanna be safe but at the same time want my cam to look fresh! Dont want any issues with cops!

My uncle (a detecive) says by law it is illegal to drive a modified vehicle in any way esp. suspension both lowered and lifted but there is not enough laws to enforce it. the biggie are engine modifications as they effect emmisions (plus is a hassle to somg your car) As for the front number plate, it is not illegal as long as it is clearly visible, this does not include putting it in your front window.

i believe they will pull you over if they believe the vehicle to be unsafe or unsafe to others on the road. i wouldnt worry unless youve dropped it 4 inches and your wheels have so much retarded camber it looks like your ball joints will shear off. and your frame is emitting a shower of sparks.

but it all depends on the officer and how you are driving....

Okay, that's retarded. True or not. Wow. I'll stay on the east coast.

1. If it's too low (as specified on the DMV site) then yes, it's illegal.

2. As long as you have the front plate, I'm pretty sure it's legal. Not sure why you'd want to move it to the side though.

would yours be consider illegal? b/c my friends tutor or something got pulled over because his suspension was too low while making a right turn. It didnt even look that low to me the gap between the wheel and the body was like lets say 1 finger gap, it just looked sporty but he ended up getting fined. how much finger gap is between your car and the wheel?

I think it's something like the lowest point of the car can't be lower than the lowest point of the wheel in case of a tire blowout. The headlights also can't be lower than a specified height if I recall correctly.

Mine's not illegal, although I can imagine getting pulled over for just about anything around this area. I've been pulled over twice for exhaust (legal with documents from the state referee to prove it) and the cops didn't say anything about my ride height. This varies depending on where I park, but I have a 2 finger gap in the front and 1.5 finger gap in the rear, sometimes less. Advertised drop with Eibach's is 1.2" all around. If you look at my front lips, there's about 5" of ground clearance so my car looks slammed from far away.

California rules suck.
1. From the center of your headlight to the ground, must be 22inch or more. Thats how low you can go.

2. As long as your license plate is on your Bumper, it should be legal.

California Car height laws:

1. 24008. It is unlawful to operate any passenger vehicle, or commercial vehicle under 6,000 pounds, which has been modified from the original design so that any portion of the vehicle, other than the wheels, has less clearance from the surface of a level roadway than the clearance between the roadway and the lowermost portion of any rim of any wheel in contact with the roadway.

Amended Ch. 462, Stats. 1984. Effective January 1, 1985.

2. Frame and Floor Height

24008.5. (a) No person shall operate any motor vehicle with a frame height or body floor height greater than specified in subdivisions (b) and (c).

(b) The maximum frame height is as follows:
[This table lists the maximum frame height for various types of vehicles.] *
Vehicle Type Frame Height

(1) Passenger vehicles, except housecars 23 inches

(2) All other motor vehicles, including housecars, as follows:
Up to 4,500 pounds GVWR 27 inches
4,501 to 7,500 pounds GVWR 30 inches
7,501 to 10,000 pounds GVWR 31 inches

(c) The lowest portion of the body floor shall not be more than five inches above the top of the frame.

(d) The following definitions govern the construction of this section:

(1) "Frame" means the main longitudinal structural members of the chassis of the vehicle or, for vehicles with unitized body construction, the lowest main longitudinal structural members of the body of the vehicle.

(2) "Frame height" means the vertical distance between the ground and the lowest point on the frame, measured when the vehicle is unladen on a level surface at the lowest point on the frame midway between the front axle and the second axle on the vehicle.

(3) "GVWR" means the manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating, as defined in Section 390, whether or not the vehicle is modified by use of parts not originally installed by the manufacturer.

* The bracketed information has been added editorially to meet accessibility requirements and is not part of statute.

Amended Ch. 718, Stats. 1987. Effective January 1, 1988.

3. Depending on the state that you live in the laws will vary. In most cases I don't believe there is a minimum ground clearance, however I believe your headlights must be 21 or 22 inches from the ground.
