I am having work done on my 1998 camry I4. the timing belt is being replaced and the person working on the car wants $230. im wondering if this is a reasonable price. The person working on my car is someone who previously worked on a friends of a friend of a friends car of mine and the work is being done in my driveway. $230 for just labor is this a resonable price? he has been working for abour 2 hours and is still working on it as i am typing.
This is a friend who has a lift/shop at his house (EDIT: in his garage, I don't want you thinking he has a lift in his living room ) , so yes, a private thing

If hes just a backyard mechanic and hes only doing the belt 165ish. Its a simple job. Additional like 50$ if hes doing the pump and seals. 200 to get everything done is about right.
Work is being done on just the belt. he said hes almost done. jsut finishing up.... im going to offer 170 and no more than 180... i guess 230 is to much for just timing belt
If hes doing the waterpump, oil seals and the tensioner and idler thats a ok price just for labor.
A shop would basically charge that much though. If hes just doing the belt your getting ripped off.
+1
I'd say $200 for EVERYTHING (h2o pump, seals, belt). $225 if your in a good mood.
