When your engine is cold, it idles-up.. That coupled with worn motor mounts would exacerbate the problem. When I shift my mom's gen 3.5 into reverse, there's a clunk to it but nothing major and there's no vibration at idle. I don't know how worn the motor mounts are but I did change the 'dogbone' mount last year.. It took literally 60 seconds and the old one was torn to shreds so I figured it was worthwhile.

Check for cracks in the "dog bone", about $27 + shipping on rockauto.com:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=474867

If you see cracks in the rubber, replace it. It may be time to do the large engine mounts too if this one goes bad (puts additional strain, in addition to normal aging).

WHOA there. If he replaces the dog bone, then he should upgrade to the gen 4 dog bone.

Standard catalogs spec different dog bones for Gen3 and Gen4. They must be different enough for suppliers to stock both.

So you're saying the dimensions may be identical except the rubber configuration?

could be the mounts, but if it's related to engine temps, id say that your trans hasn't warmed up; it's just engaging really harshly, probably because the fluidsare stillstill somewhat viscuous... when was last time you did a flush?

i've read it a while ago while digging around my own gen4 vibrations (now all fixed finally!) and as far as i remember gen3 can use gen4 dog bone if you replace its mounting bracket too (so they match).

here is the link:

Yes, the dogbone upgrade is only for Gen3 4 cylinder models, upgrading with the gen4, 4 cylinder hardware.

Hey guys, I wanted to do the dogbone upgrade, but don't want to pay the price for OEM parts. I found aftermarket ones on rockauto, however would like to know your thoughts on this before ordering. Would it still do the job(prevent most vibration)? The dogbone(torque strut) is BECK/ARNLEY Part # 1041751 for $25.79, and the dogbone bracket(torque strut mount) is ANCHOR Part # 8200 for $12.28.
Also, am I looking at the correct parts, because these are considerably cheaper than oem.

For the dog bone, either Becn Arnley or Anchor is fine. It's the engine mounts that I insist on OEM. Do you have an automatic or manual. Because your BA number is for auto, but your Anchor number is manual. But if the dog bone is gone, the main mounts may not be far behind.

According to http://www.beckcatalog.com/
That is the correct "Gen 4" dog bone for automatic transmission.

Anchor mount for Gen 4 auto should be 8698
, your 8200 is for a manual transmission:
http://www.showmetheparts.com/anchor/

(always check numbers using the parts manufacturers' web catalogs)
