96 camry stalling and dies

ok i own a 96 camry but it has a problem the idle is high i took the idle valve off and cleaned it and checked it to see if it closes and opens and it does both i changed out the tps sensor and its the same issue
now when i put the car in drive and i try to go it would go and then just run out of power there is no throttle response or anything it just stalls and then after a couple second it jerks and has lots of power and goes and then it does the same thing all over
what could be the problem
i also replaced the fuel pump and the fuel injectors and its the same problem also changed the distrubitor no luck and spark plugs no luck
what could be the problem

Did you check for a vacuum leak? Check the large tube leading to the throttle body for cracks. If you don't find any vacuum leaks, then check the resistance of the plug wires. (You mentioned you replaced the plugs, but not the plug wires.) Don't be surprised if you find 1 or 2 that show an open circuit.

yeh didnt replace the plug wires
it doesnt idle high anymore it idles at 1,100rpm
sometimes at 1k rpms
drove it and it did the same thing a little better but its like the fuel pressure cuts off and rpm drops and then all of a sudden its like it gets a burst of fuel and it goes again
going to replace the wires next

That's still a high idle...spec is 700 +/- 50. Lots of things pointing to a vacuum leak here.

Check to make sure someone hasn't been messing with the throttle opener -- take a look at it when it's idling, and the end shouldn't be touching the throttle plate opener. If you pull the vacuum hose to the throttle opener, it should move to contact the throttle plate, and idle should increase.

It definately sounds as if its getting un-metered air from somewhere as mentioned above - there must be an air leak somewhere!

Do you hear a hissing sound, whistling, sucking. . . ect? Any recent engine work? I mean it sounds like this process has been in the works for a while so it must be progressively getting worse???

Most important question: Do all of the issues go away once off idle and pulling some RPM (like 2000RPM)?

Does the temperature gauge read where it normally used to?

Any CEL codes?
What does the exhaust smell like at idle?

All helpful hints if you can answer them.

Good luck,
