3rd Generation Camry V6 Intake DIY Progress and Question

today I finally took apart the airbox and threw on my cone filter.

the 3vz AFM is designed so weird. one end is round and other side is square.
This make it hard to attach a cone filter. however an adapter is widely available but for those who do not have the knowledge, you might not be able to find it.

The AFM between many toyota models are the same. In this case, the 3S-GTE has an AFM that's the same as the 3VZ AFM. There are many intake kits and parts for the 3S-GTE. There is this particular part that converts the square shaped AFM opening to a 3" round tube. This way cone filters can be attached easily.

this is what the AFM adapter looks like:

Ebay lists them as MAF adapters...but i guess those dumb sellers don't know the difference between MAF and AFM....but then no big deal..i forgive them.
this part costed me $4 dollars and $8 to ship. so $12 in total.

some will come as a kit with a filter, however I already had a Weapon-R filter from the previous SRI kit for the 5S-FE.

So I took this opportunity to take off the AFM and clean it with throttle body cleaner and gave it a quick sanding and painted it to clean it up.

install and finish.
I however hate this tube thing.

This tube looks ugly, and it gets dirty pretty quickly. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what the hoses that are attached to this tube do exactly. I'm guessing right now the thinner one is the breather for the crankcase cuz i see it going into the valve cover. The bigger one goes into the intake manifold. I believe it's the IAC hose...so..I'm wondering if i could replace this rubber tube with an metal pipe and delete the crank case breather by putting a tiny filter on the hose connecting to the valve cover and for the IAC hose i'll tap it into the metal pipe or something.

has anyone done this? I seen couple of rigs, but they all ended up looking junky with like soda cans and plumbing hose and stuff. I wanna make it clean and be able to use the pipe for my future turbo build so all that pressure can be handled

so the bigger hose going into the rubber tube is for sound deafening? how does that work? i see it going into the intake manifold. if i get rid of it, do i just plug it at the intake manifold?

haha you kinda got it backwards, the AFM should be as close as possible to the throttle body

i see i see. you turned your AFM 90 degrees and made a cold air intake.

well. the problem i have right now is to see how i can eliminate the two hoses and make it a straight pipe that will hold pressure if i go boost.
using something like rubber pipe will be too soft and it'll expand as well...

eitherway, a good rig though!

that's what i prefer as well. I actually trimmed off an inch of the tube to make the AFM closer.

now explain to me why the bigger hose is just for sound defeaning? what does it do exactly?

Didn't make a bit of a difference where i moved it

The larger diameter pipe is indeed for the idle air system and it must be left in the system after the AFM

^so the crankcase breather can be deleted to a filter but the idle air hose needs to remain intact.
that's what i needed to know and tyvm.
