3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
last thursday i drove over to a buddy's house to borrow his F250 to move some furniture. well, it was rainy and dark and i accidently drove off the gravel path. the camry came to an abrupt stop. dammit. i put her in reverse and drive a couple of times but she didnt budge. dammit.
yesterday i finally got around to pulling her out. luckily i was able to do this myself since my buddy wasnt home.
That sucks man. At least you got out. Nothing wrong with Ford! I used our '03 Expedition to drag around the wrecked camry quite a bit.

I've been saved by some Ford's numerous times after my first swap and I would stall out (back before I wired the starter) I would have to have my dad use either the E350 van or the 5.0L thunderbird to bring me home.
They're good cars, they just suck when they break down because American cars are just harder to work on.
im not much of a ford fan myself (owned a POS tempo) but i respect this truck. its a 1996 turbo diesel with 255k miles and runs great even after being a tow vehicle (has a 5th wheel) for most of its life.
perfect time for my "a LSD would have saved you" rant.

my other car is a '83 ford mustang 'vert that i'm working on a new drivetrain for. My work truck is a '96 F-150 I-6 5spd. It needs some work too, but it sure can take a beating.
Ford makes trucks that last through all sorts of abuse. Imports last a long time, but you gotta keep up with them.

i have to chime in about ford motor company. i have had absolutely terrible luck with their shit. lets count.
98 crown vic. got it at 60k, was dealer maintained, and maintained by me to the T..... replaced the starter, alternator, ps pump, A/c compressor, ball joints and tyroid ends. cruise control deactivation switch caught fire while i was mowing my lawn one day. that part was later recalled. there is more, just cant think at this time...at 130k the trans died. still sitting in my uncle's driveway. Any takers?? lolz
2000 Focus ZTS... bought this lemon brand new. would die any time you turned right going up a hill. leaked oil. ball joint busted out of nowhere. and would die randomly. alarm would go off in the middle of the nite, in my garage, for no reason. A/C never was very cold, tires only lasted 20k.... tranny finally went out at 100k, sold it on craigslist. once again, maintained and driven nicely.
02 Taurus. bought with 30k on it. a/c compressor, starter, egr valve, alternator, fuel pump, almost every sensor replaced. engine work at 80k. new trans at 100k. never did run right. last september, at 110k, i T-boned an exploder doing 45 (he ran a light)... fuel pump cut off never flipped. airbags didnt deploy. glad i was wearing my seatbelt.
97 F150. currently 120k. have replaced the clutch, slave cylinder, rebuilt the engine and the front end. last xmas it caught fire parked at my friends house, next to a propane tank. it was the wires for the seatbelt on the drivers seat. burned a 12 inch hole in the seat, up the side, and burned the ceiling. Did not pop the window, somehow, and the fire died before it could consume the entire truck. didnt have comp coverage, so i still have it. replaced the seats and carpet, etc, but it still stinks like the fire.
however, i have a buddy that has a club wagon van. 98. all he ever does is change the oil. never has touched the tranny, and he hauls a crapload of carpet and/or tile in it on a daily basis. he has 270k on it, and runs well.....
(note: my father's econoline van caught fire and burned, completely, in like 7 minutes, at the carpet store before the fire dept got there....
Hopefully, I have better luck with my new found friend, my camry.........
