2000 camry P0125

I have a 2000 camry with a P0125 code. It had P0171, P1130 and P1135. Brought it in and they found a hole in the flex pipe before the catalytic converter. They said to repair this first, erase codes and see what happens to the CEL codes. Now it is a P0125 (coolant not hot enough) and a pending P0171 and P1130. When codes are erased with a scan tool does it also erase the pending codes? Service mgr said it may need a thermostat change, but to drive it for a week first to see if any more codes appear besides the P0125. Internet seems to indicate O2 sensor, not thermostat. Any ideas?

Flex pipe was fixed and codes cleared. Drove home from repair 3 miles (15 minutes) and temp was half way as usual. Had to turn off heater as it was a warm day for Buffalo (50 degrees) so heater seems to work and it worked fine all winter according to my daughter (her car). I will check on the fans and double check the heater output tonight, but the fans were not on all the time prior to flex pipe fix.

I assume this is a 5S-FE (4 cylinder) rig?

Interesting. California spec car in New York? Does New York require Cali spec cars?

If the temp gauge is indicating it's usual, it's almost certainly not the thermostat.

Everything is pointing to either one heck of a vacuum leak (enough to keep the engine running lean all the time) or a failed upstream A/F sensor.

What's your warmed-up idle speed? A very high idle would be a good indication of a vacuum leak.

4 cyl automatic. I don't think it is California, but I will check (we bought it used 3 years ago). Warmed up idle is normal 750 or so.

Gotta be Cali spec -- the codes don't make any sense otherwise. Should be a sticker on the underside of the hood that says whether is California or Federal emissions compliant.

OK, normal idle. Upstream A/F sensor is toast. Too bad -- that's the expensive one.

Rockauto is probably your best bet for the replacement part (make sure you get the A/F sensor for the Cali rig). Denso would be OEM-equivalent. To make things simple, just pay a bit extra and get the version specific to your vehicle instead of the generic -- unless you're comfortable with a soldering iron.

I am too in WNY. My 2000 Camry is a California emission car. Check on the emission sticker that is on the hood. It will tell you if it is Federal or California. They will have different design and parts for emission requirements.
Were did you take it?

you can get NTK A/F sensor (NGK company) which as good as OEM/Denso for the price of around $170 off amazon. that's what i did, though i paid $230 for this f**ker 2 weeks ago, now price dropped. it's an OEM fit, no soldering, simple plug and play (didn't have time to install it yet).

Amazon Amazon

it seems in NJ/NY area most camrys are california specs (mine is too).

NGK makes good stuff. Another member here likes the Bosch sensors, but I have no experience with those (Bosch plugs, OTOH, never again )

yeah, i tried 3 sets of bosch plug wires and it was a nightmare ... all of them had the same factory fault - rubber boots were easily getting detached from the "coil" (on spark plug end) making them useless very quickly. literally it was becoming garbage after removal of wire from spark plug. i was lucky to return them to autozone for exchange after 3 months (in warranty exchange) and then i returned those new ones for a refund to another autozone branch LOL. what's most funny was that Bosch wires cost $60 while NGK was below $40. doesn't make any sense to me.

on contrary i heard good stuff about bosch OE o2 sensors, however i don't trust this brand anymore at all, their plugs also sucked compared to Denso or NGK.

EDIT: i love amazon
after my email they refunded me the price difference on this A/F sensor

I took it to midas for the initial check where they fixed the flex pipe. No sticker under the hood for emissions, just refrigerant. Called dealer with the vin and they confirmed CA. They have the AF sensor in stock at $249. I guess I will try the internet for a better price. Is there an easy way to test the af sensor before I buy a new one? With a scan tool I do not see a listing for an AF sensor, just the O2B1S2, should it be there?

a/f sensor is o2b1s1 or o2s11 or something similar pointing to bank1 and sensor1. it's voltage will be ~3.3V at idle (or moving between 2.8V, 3.8V or those ranges) while rear one called o2b1s2 or o2s12 will alternate between <0.45V and >0.60V (no more than 1V though).

get NTK sensor i posted above for $170 shipped from amazon. best you can get for this money.

there is also a resistance test for this sensor which would point if it detects oxygen properly, check SFI manual for that. did the code come back after fixing flex pipe ?

Here ya go, $139 shipped, factory Denso.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-99-00-Toyota-Camry-Air-Fuel-Ratio-Sensor-8946741021_W0QQitemZ270544283887QQcmdZViewItemQQpt ZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3efdb 228ef

That will probably take care of 0171,1130,1135. I'd guess the 0125 is unrelated but who knows...

That's for the 1MZ-FE (6 cylinder). Might be compatible, but looking up the Toyota part number for the 2000 California 5S-FE ( 89467-33020 ) doesn't show it superseded by that part number, so I'd be leery.
