3rd Generation idle help and questions

ok so when my car is fully warm, it idles at 750 rpm. as its down that low it tends to chug a little and vibrate the car alot. when i go to take off it even bogs down a little. i noticed though right around 1000 rpm the car runs perfect. no vibrations no bogging or anything i was just curious about these 2 questions

1.is it to much stress on the car to raise my idle to 1k? or maybe up a little higher than 750 so it doesnt shake and bog down?

2. how exactly do you adjust i could never understand.

thanks guys!

Chris

750 is in spec actually. The repair manual states the idle should be 750rpm + or - 50rpm. 1000rpm is way too high for idle.

Are you suggesting to turn your distributor to change your timing?

Its electronically controlled so it would be much easier to find the real problem and then fix it.

i have some experience with gen4 only, not sure if it applies to gen3 too ... there is an adjustement screw on throttle linkage that allows adjustment of idling speed, but that applies only to non-driving gears (P and N) and computer will take over completely in adjusting the idling speed on any driving gear.

in the end you will have about 1,000rpm while car in Park or Neutral, and still 700 in D,R,2,L at full stop. also such big difference in engine speed will cause harsh gears shifting in parking lot and most likely will kill your engine mounts much quicker (it happened to me). not worth it!

i had asked a friend to do this in past and then forgot, only recently had to revert that "mod" since the effect was bad, long story short the throttle adjustment was causing the throttle plate to stay a little open at idle and it was affecting engine vacuum and causing all sorts of other trouble over time. not a recommended way to go.

as other said, try cleaning TB and IAC with sea foam deep creep and toothbrush. that should fix your idling problem. you might want to replace the spark plugs, wires and filters too as they may affect idling speed as well. checking for vacuum leaks would be also a good idea as this may cause weird things to happen.
