1998 Camry LE 2.2 4 cyl auto
I would like to get some more advice on removing the A140E from my 98 Camry
I would like to remove the transmission from above?, without removing the engine or the sub frame is this possible?.It looks like it can be done this way, but I'm not totally 100% sure it will come out this way. lt looks like a tight fit..I would like to make this as easy as possible if possible since it's just me doing this transplant
I have all the parts removed from above the transmission and my next step will be to start on removing the drive shafts...is it possible to only remove the LH drive shaft only or do I have to remove both drive shafts?...I have read that some members only remove the LH drive shaft and just pull away the transmission from the RH drive shaft
I'm use to pulling the rear wheel transmissions and this will be first front wheel drive swap
Well, no response means I guess that's a frontier where no one has gone before. So beam it up Scotty!!
At least in dropping from below only the driver side axle needs to be remove and you can slide the thing out towards the driver side and reinstall in reverse. But I guess we just don't know if it will clear going the top route.
Are you going to do the rear main seal while at it?

thanks for the reply!....I'm not sure either, but I still may have to drop from underneath but seems like the car has to be really high though in order for the transmission to be lowered and out on the passenger side. I'm working on a dirt floor at home and would like to avoid that rout if I can
I may have to remove the engine with transmission together, just seems like a lot of work to just replace a transmission, I'm use to the rear wheel vehicles just
I forgot to mark the TC in relation to the black bolt, I hope I didn't screw things up...I will get a t.c. with the used tranny is there a procedure to installing it

rear main seal, yep going to replace that also....so if I drop the transmission from underneath then I can avoid removing the RH drive shaft?.....just slide the transmission away and down and out?
Well I'm still thinking about which way to remove the transmission....if I remove it from above there will be less work but the space it sits in is tight, on the other hand, if I remove the engine and transmission as a whole unit there is still the same amount of room for the transmission
I'm thinking I will try to maneuver the transmission out from above.....well it's a crap shoot either way
I still think, if you've got the time, to remove the engine and transmission as one piece. That way you can clean up the engine real well too, and replace any gaskets or seals you might need.
You've already got most of the work done, to be able to get the engine out from what I remember of the pictures you posted, you just need to remove the coolant hoses, pull the wiring harness from the computer (three clips, easy stuff) and then the two motor mounts. Power steering and A/C and you're ready to yank it!
your probably right....I'll sleep on it tonight....the engine is really clean and I did a timing belt change 2yrs ago, but wouldn't hurt to spruce it up some
just got to figure out where and what I can set the engine on....maybe some 6x6 post or something
Or experiment with trying to remove the transmission from top.
The only added effort is hooking up the cherry picker and trying to see if it separates from the engine with enough clearance. Otherwise bolt it back up and continue as if pull both.

Find an old tire, preferably a low profile tire and set the engine in that. The stiff and short side walls hold engines well. I've been using one for a few months now and it's wonderful.
You can just head over to your local tire shop and they will more than likely have an old tire that you can have. Hell, get two just so you have one for the trans to sit in too. The oil pan fits perfectly into a tire, so I think that's your best option.
