92 Camry Stereo Problem

i bought the car and the radio was stolen, so the factory radio harness is cut. i bought an Alpine cd player and after much work i have hard wired it to the car harness thats cut. i have power and the cd player is working but i am getting no sound. im thinking because this car has a factory amplifier under the passenger seat and i was wondering if i could just bypass that to make the speakers work. thanks in advance.

i don't have any experience with toyota factory amplifiers but on GM vehicles with factory amplifiers it is typically bypassed by running new speaker wires from the radio to the wires that are located in the kick panels. For the read speakers the wires are run along the carpet moulding the same as if you were installing an amplifier in the trunk.

I'm imagining that the amplifier is powered by radio 12v supply but the diagrams I have don't mention amplifier wiring. As I mentioned above, running new speaker wires is probably your best bet if you don't want to find a camry at the bone yard with a factory ampifier and cut the harness off of it.

Good luck

It is likely that the factory amplifier was powered from the factory stereo whenever it was turned on. Are there any wires in the factory harness that you didn't use? If there is then it is probably the amplifier power. If your new stereo has a remote power output you should be able to use it to turn on the amplifier under your seat. If you can't get this to work, then you should be able to bypass the amplifier and feed the speakers directly from the stereo. Welcome to TOYOTA NATION!

I would repair the factory harness first. It would be easier to find another Camry at a local salvage yard, take the part of the harness you're missing out that car, then splice it into your car. Then you'll just need an adapter harness to connect the new stereo. No need to guess what wires go where, and which ones to bypass.

I did the very same thing to my 87 Celica. The CD player was stolen out of it, and the wire harness was cut. I got what I need from a salvage yard, spliced it in, then popped in a old stereo I had lying around. It works perfectly fine.

Anyway, find out if there are any salvage yards around your area, and ask if they have any mid 90's Toyotas. The harnesses should be the same for all of them.

heres the colors and whatnot

that is, if they reach all the way to the headunit or amp.

my brothers 91 celica has the amp under the passenger seat I believe, so I would assume if equipped on your car, it would be similarly located
