Wheel help

So my buddy gave me some 17" wheels that he had on his Mazda.

They are 17x7 wheels.

I put them on the other day and I took the car for a ride.

When I get to the end of the street I hear a noise. It sounds as if the wheels are rubbing but I have no idea what it could be.

Could the wheels not being balanced for the car cause this?

Low tire pressure?

What's the offset? Low tire pressure and being off balanced shouldn't cause any noise. just ride quality.

I don't know if this will apply in your case or not but I have a 1998 Camry and found a set of 2003 Lexus IS300 rims and tires for sale. I did a quick search at TireRack and found that they both had an almost identical offset and the stud pattern was identical, so I figgured I was good to go.

Well I got the wheels home and put the car up in the air and found that the front wheels hit the brake caliper mount and in the rear the tires rubbed the struts. I was able to rectify the situation by grinding some material off the brake caliper mounts and spacing the wheels 4mm by using the combination of spacing and grinding I was able to maintain the hub wheel interface so the wheels are a lot more sound than if I had used the common 10mm or wider spacers.

So should I be good with a 5mm spacer?

Yeah maybe,

But it really depends on where the wheels are hitting, pull one of them and look to see where the contact is. If the contact is straight in toward the direction of the hub then the 5mm spacer would give you a full 5mm of space, if on the other hand the wheel was rubbing on the curve or the wheel at a 45° angle then it would only give you 2.5 which may or may not be enough, if on the other hand its hitting the outside of a brake caliper you may need to pull the wheel outwards 15mm or more to achieve adequate clearance....Sorry for the complicated answer but you just can't cheat physics
