3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys! I've been doing some serious reading on this forum for the past month or two and have learned more about my Camry in that short time than I have since 2001. <----Year of my car
Anyways, I have been debating between an HID kit or simply getting new Halogen bulbs for obviously a cheaper price, but lets just say I decide to get the halogens: 1. If they are tinted blue, is the output of the light the same or less? 2. Any suggestions, if any, on brands or wattage? Remember, its a Gen 4.5
Well theres a HID kit floating around ebay for about 40 bucks shipped. Price wise that the same if not a few bucks cheaper then getting ultrastar halogens.
The light output doesnt have to be blue colored. My friend got 6000k hids and they are basically white. 5000k would be pure white and offer you the highest light output. Anything over 6k is going to give you problems without a HID retrofit which will cost a couple hundo.
If your headlights are still nice and clear, 5 or 6k HIDs shouldent be a glare issue, especially if you adjust the headlights.
The Following User Says Thank You to carsrus For This Useful Post:
1. cheap HIDs are just that...cheap. 9-10 they wont last as long as a good set of halogens and their output isnt that much better.
2. Hid's used without projectors works in very few cars. they are alright in the gen4 but the 4.5 creates more hotspots and has more glare from what iver herd. personally id search the threads here to see what the over all opinions of HIDs in gen4.5 headlights is.
3. theoes blue tinited halogens are weak and also dont last long. the light output is often worse then stock.
HIDs are alot brighter and the headlights are not designed for that. HIDs typically need direction while halogens make the most of the light they emit. as a result, HIDs in NON hid housings often dispurse more light in directions that dont help you...legaly or practically.
HIDs are a kit that includes a ballast and a bulb. cheaper kits have low quality associated with them. the balasts can go bad quick or the bulbs can go out and they are expensive to replace.
I recently put in a set of 6000K H.I.D.s in my Legend, paid around $70 for em on clearence, they are nice. Made sure to get shields for the HIDs since they are in the halogen housing, so they are cut off well w/ no glare. I also aimed them down slightly for an extra measure.
Listen to bird!
He knows what he's talking about, buy cheap & you will get it. In the one honda meet I did so far, I couldnt get over how cheap the H.I.D. kits (quality-wise), these Civic & Honda boys were putting in, and telling me how their bulbs generally go out 4x a year, I don't know if it was due to both their lackluster electrical skills or the sheer crap they were using but, it wasnt good, thats why you cant beat the Toyota Community.

The Honda boys, sadly enough seem to have a lot of stuff like that associated with them, hence why they give the real Honda guys a bad name But yeah, listen to Bigbird!! He know his stuff If you do decide to buy an HID kit, I'd go with Mod-express, a lot of people on here have a kit from them, including myself. E-mail him (Robert, I believe, was his name) and you may be able to pull off free shipping!! The guy responds to e-mails with lighting speed too!

And I just checked out the Mod-express website. For sure looked more legit than ebay, go figure. The advice is incredible guys can't thank you enough!

I have been looking on google, having a hard time finding shields for 9600 bulbs but all the search results seem to have sihelds for H3 and H4 bulbs. Will those work/fit the same?
