3rd Generation When is it a "Classic Camry"?

Question, I have a 1993 LE V6 Toyota Camry, when is it considered a "Classic"? How many years old does it have to be?......

In most states, the government says 20 years old, so in three years.

"classic" in most states chages inspection and emissions standards. Here in MD, when we get classic plates the car no longer has to go through emissions because the state assumes the lack of replacement parts to make a repair practical. we also jsut have classic written in small letters on the top of the plate, so its not ugly.

To me a car be comes a "classic" when just the mention of its name brings up thoughts of days/eras past. Better yet, if a song is written about it. For instance, "Little Deuce Coupe," "409," "Mustang Sally," Little Red Corvette," "Greased Lightning." OK, the last one is more about a hot rods in general, than a specific car, but you get the point.

There will never be a time when someone will look at a picture of a Camry, and associate it with a cultural phenomenon or a specific era, like the yellow Ford coupe from American Graffiti the DB5 from the James Bond movies, the red & white Ford Gran Torino from Starsky & Hutch, or the blacked out Pontiac Trans Am from Knight Rider series. Hell, the entire decade of the 50's can be summed up in one phrase...Chevy Bel Air. The 60's was all about horse power, and can be called the era of the "Pony Cars."

Our cars will eventually be labeled as a classic car on paper, but in the hearts and minds of the general public they will just be another old 90's economy car. However, no matter what kind of car it is, there will always be a group or "Nation" of people that will love, and cherish the car. They view that car like a car collector would view a '63 Jaguar E-Type.

We see, and love our cars like one else can. So, to us, they are already classics. That's all that really matters, right?

I just bought a 21 years old Z and still have to went through the standard inspection - almost failed because of the stock junky EGR. And the state is no longer keep the 30 years rolling smog exempt ... Goddamn California !!!

Piece of weirdness - there is a 'community' for preservation and restoration of rolling road-apples like Gremlins, Vegas, and Pintos. There are folks that wax enthusiastic about Novas and Chevelles. So, even though the Camry is currently a very 'common' vehicle, and older ones are seen as utilitarian transportation appliances - it's not that far out there for some folks to have considerable nostalgia for the early generations. Heck, I'd be willing to bet there's at least one or 2 of younger forum members here who were conceived in the back seat of one.

hey look, another old economy car. If you wait long enough styles will change enough so that our cars will truly look the part. given the car above is a very nice looking car to begin with, I would have to say that the gen 3 and 3.5's are the best looking camrys so far. now i really doubt that anyone worth mentioning will be writing songs about them, and in the future people may not see one and say, WOW a gen 3.5 Camry, but they will look and see a classic car if you can keep yours on the road long enough.
