3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I bought a 1996 Camry v6 xle from my dad's friend with 172k, quick and smooth. I am surprised at the condition it is in! below are some pictures. I have a question about the car. Sometimes, it will not start up on the first attempt, it is difficult to explain, but my friend believes it is the security system possibly going out anyway picture time!
More pictures if you want! let me know what you think about the ignition problem. I need to get this car to 200k miles! Also check engine light is on and the o2 sensor was just replaced...But that problem appears to be a needle in a haystack situation.
If you haven't change your plugs and wires, that might be a good start. My car use to have that random not starting problem too, I changed the plungs and wires just because it's time and haven't had a problem since like 3 weeks ago. Oh, and I have 181K on my gen 4

So, describe the starting problem. You turn the key and what happens? A click, and you keep turning the key back and forth (click-click-click) until it starts? Or does the engine turn over but not catch for a while? Or something else?
As others have mentioned, have a parts store read the code(s) that are causing the CEL, and we'll take it from there.

thanks for the warm welcome everybody. It does both of what you describe, a click until it decides to catch, but tonight it really quickly started to turn over and stopped, then i tried it again, the interior lights flickered( knob was turned off which seemed peculiar) and I tried about 5 times then it finally turned over... any suggestions are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance and again for the advice!
Side note- after my car caught I raced my friend audi a6 and won! it was funny. I attribute my win to the take off and the wonderful ect button.
Ok, let me say it before anyone else does. Most of us here on TN looks down on street racing. Telling stories of it is a no, no. I've actually seen some (former) members get banned because they admitted to street racing.

Understandable, its bad. Just on our way home from work. Clear road near inbetween cities, nothing extreme. I did not buy the car to rice around in, but just out of curiosity decided to run and stopped before 80mph. Its not my intention to street race, I am just proud of my vehicle.
You could try having the battery tested, most places will do that for free, also have them test that the battery is not being slowly drained when the car is sitting. if it is drawing power when off try to get them to tell you how many amps are being pulled from the battery. I sounds to me like the starter may have just enough force to get the car started, but not much more. toyota used very well engineered starters with quality parts, mine is the original starter with 203k miles on it, never rebuilt. that is why i suspect that it isn't getting enough voltage. is there anything electronic that is not working?
