Oil Change Info

First post!

I'm changing the oil on my brother's '99 LE, but I need some help with some info.

The car has 185K+ miles on it. I have a spare 5qt jug of valvoline 1 synthetic 5w-20. Would it be fine using this oil?
I'll go to walmart and pick up an oil filter, but I don't know which size to get. Can someone help me here?

They always have a book or computer, ;or ask the parts guy in the store, to help you to know what size filters to buy.

I was trying to look it up on amazon, but they need the manufacture body code # which I don't know (either MCV2 or SXV2). Where do I find this?

Amazon part lookup is weird for me. Trust the people at the store your buying from. Plus, the filter changes with the engine model, not the body model. You should know if you have the six cylinder or four cylinder engine when you go into the store.

If youve never changed the oil before with synthetic dont start at 185k. It will leak.

Save the synthetic for your own ride and get some high mileage conventional either 5w30 or 10w30.
wix/napa gold filter is 1394 for the 4cyl. Dunno about other brands/engines

i think 5w20 is not recommended for this engine in the temperatures you'll have during this oil change. Also probably too light for a high mileage engine especially with warm weather coming. If i were going to use this oil i'd pick up some STP and dump that in to thicken it but thats the mad scientist part of me - otherwise id save itfor the winter. I'd use the oil the owners manual says to, or 30w if it is getting warm where you are - old engines are loose engines.

A few oil filter choices...

4cyl:
Purolator - Pureone = PL14476

Purolator = L14476

Mobil 1 = M1-103

Fram = PH4967 or HM4967 or TG4967

AC Delco = PF1233

6cyl:
Purolator - Pureone = PL10241

Purolator = L10241

Mobil 1 = M1-102

Fram = PH3614 or HM 3614 or TG3614

AC Delco = PF53

For oil, the recommended type should be printed on the oil cap.

3.8 from completely empty. Most people dump in 4 quarts... but I never did.

Repair manual specifies 4.6qt for a drain & refill(with filter change). That's what I go by, and never had any problems.

That doesn't overfill it? The owner manual specifically says 3.8qts.

My oil level's always at the full mark after an oil change. Maybe 3.8qts without a filter change.

EDIT:

I just checked the repair manual. Drain & refill with filter change = 4.5qts. Drain & refill without filter change = 3.8qts.

This is my first time using high mileage oil. I picked up some castrol gtx HM 5w-30 since it was on sale. What's the OCI for HM oil with 65:35 (hwy:city) ratio?
