Anyone have picture of how the left side trans. mount should look like?
I'm asking about this because the engine (4 cyl.) seems to vibrate more than I think it should, but maybe it's normal. Something I noticed: I had the car up on jackstands this last week and noticed the left trans mount looked really weird. It looked like there was a bolt & washer sticking way up in the middle of the mount about 1.5 inches or so, is this normal, or is something missing? Or am I totally mistaken and it's not the trans mount but something else? I wish I took a picture of it, but now the car is in the drive w/ the wheels back on it. Just wondering if this may be the cause of my engine vibration...btw it only seems to vibrate whenever the trans is in gear with my foot on the brake pedal holding the car at a dead stop (no rolling)...

I'd immediately link you to http://www.**********s.com/camry/ but that isn't going to give you actual photographs. I'm thinking ASG14 might have some actual pictures... but i'll wait for him to chime in. Tried the ol' search feature?

Oops. Re-read. Engine vibration through the steering wheel when idling in gear with the brake pressed is a COMMON problem on the 5S-FE (4cyl). It's usually due to the "dog bone" upper engine mount being bad. You can replace it but it'll wear out again quickly if other mounts (engine and/or tranny) are bad. Most people swap them with the dog bone from a 4th generation 5S-FE.... it's bigger and has less vibrations.

Thanks for that reply. I found the thread where it discusses the 4th gen. dog bone. I've got the part #'s, so I guess I'll need to make a decision whether to spend the $$ on one or not.
Chris, I thought the idle was ecm controlled?

The left mount for the transmission does look funny, I agree. The mount on my 3VZ-FE Camry looks the same. Kinda makes ya think that the tranny is dropped down or the bolt is backing out. If the rubber is in good shape under mount, chances are your O.K.

I don't know that much about the computer systems on cars. But there are other factors that will affect the idle and make it rough. What does it idle at?
I haven't seen that specific mount but what your describing is more of a safety feature if the rubber bond between the two mounted parts fails, the post with the washer will retain the trans and keep it tied to the sub-frame.
Oil saturated rubber can unbound from the metal surface and that washer/post thing keeps it from moving to far.
If you installed a new dog-bone, you can try and loosen the pinch bolts securing it to allow it to self center. If this doesn't help don't leave the cars state of tune out of the equation.

I was in replacing my front pads today, so I took a picture of my tranny mount for ya. 1995 w/ 5S-FE and A140E auto tranny. This is an Toyota-made mount replaced a bit over a year ago (and really didn't need it, but I'd already bought the part).
FWIW, I've also got an annoying vibration when idling in gear...almost like the torque converter is allowing too much "pull" through. Smooth as silk in park or neutral. All motor mounts were replaced a bit over a year ago with gen-u-wine Toyota parts & the dogbone was upgraded to a Gen4 unit. Near as I could tell, it made squat difference in the idling vibration, even though the front mount and dogbone were both in bad shape, and the rear mount was iffy.
HTH...

Thank you very much for that photo. Mine was squashed down alot more. But I think it was like that because I had just had the left side of the motor lifted up by the jack to get the rear engine mount bracket off the motor mount to get the stuck cv axle's carrier bearing/engine bracket assembly out. I'll need to look again underneath there sometime (probably when I start on the timing belt). I'm also beginning to think that even if I do replace any of the mounts, the vibration will probably continue, as IMO from all the reading I've done so far, it will probably never be gotten rid of. So, I'm going to look into just taking care of maintenance items for now...
