3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi I have a 97 camry that has been coming up with P302 and P303 codes. My dad and I have tried everything we can think of and are out of ideas. We have changed the plugs and wires, replaced the fuel injectors, swapped coils around, and still haven't fixed this thing. The CEL used to only flash when i was going 65+ and up hill. Now it seems to be linked to moisture. When it's raining the car will sometimes stall on start-up and if i drive it through a puddle then the CEL starts flashing and it runs really hard. If anyone has any ideas please help me! I'm ready to give up and sell my car.
I guess I'm assuming its a six as he implied swapping the coils about. Not done as easily on a 4, as it implies buying one for 4cyl.
Beyond that, the driving characteristics read the same as my thread with the same miserable symptoms. Mine isn't harsh enough to set codes but I know its not right.
OutOfIdeas, nice of you to join us. Welcome!
Take a look here - you'll notice some of the same driving issues as yours!
Moisture and humidity-related issues are usually (not always) probs in the high-voltage section...but it sounds like you've covered all that. What brand of wires did you use? If you spray a mist of water over the wires while the engine is running (in the dark), do you see any arcing going on? Are all the spark plug wire spacers (4 of them) intact, so the plug wires aren't touching each other or the valve cover?

Tricky little devil coming in with a backup part! - geezzzz -
As hill advised, running the engine in the dark and/or with a light water mist should help if there is electrial break down. Others have been known to trace the wires with their bare fingers - {not advised, but effective}
Did you leave the coil in there? Did you drive the solara with the suspect bum coil? Also, did you verify the plug gaps before installation?

Good idea about the water. I will try that tonight and see how it goes. Drove the my car with the solara coils in it and still got the flashing CEL. Thanks for the new idea....I'll let you know how it goes.
Hmm - - from what I've learned about the ECU, you're issue is sounding like something of a bad connection as you state it flashes and comes and goes in a rather rapid nature. Is this true?
If those codes are being set, the CEL light should stay on and not flicker if they happen repeatedly on the same trip.
Makes me think you have a bad connection to something or an issue with the ECU itself.
Check this post and see if any of this relates to yours. . . At a glance, there are some similarities.

A flashing CEL with a misfire means that the misfires are so bad that the ECU thinks damage to the catalytic converter is likely (i.e., there's a shitload of unburned fuel going downstream). It is a bit strange that the CEL doesn't stay on, but the codes are still in memory. Or does the CEL stay on, but blinks under certain conditions?
The CEL does stay on it just flashes at me especially when it is wet outside. But it has turned itself completely when we had a week of it being dry outside. Thanks for all the help so far. We are going to try spraying with water and see how it goes.
