3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
When driving I hear a rattle sound coming from the passenger side rear strut. When I stop remove the tire and shake all the parts nothing seems to be loose. What could be causing the noise?
I've got the same thing - a rattle that's always there until the car is driven for awhile and then it warms up. At first it was only the front passengers but now it's 3 of them. From what people have said, sounds like the mounts.
Can anyone describe how the mounts connect or have a picture? I can't tell by looking at the fronts which part is the "mount".
My guess is rear sway arm bushing(s) or strut mount - I replaced struts and strut mounts last year and the noise was still there. Have never got around to replacing the RSB with a Whiteline or TRP counterpart with bushings - but that's on the roster for next year!

Can you describe the noise you are hearing?
(I have a noise that has developed over the last four months or so from the front/left top area that I only hear when I go over small bumps. I've looked around and secured some things, but to no avail. I even took it to a mechanic that looked, proded around, and test drove but did not find anything. I am thinking the strut mount too, but N/A Camry Sleeper did not fix the problem with new strut mounts....)
It's a continuous rattle from the front as soon as the car is in motion; size of the bumps doesn't matter. Until recently it was passenger. It used to warm up and go away but now it stays. This fits the description in the Service Bulletin for strut mounts (as found in another post). Since I have 100k, I'll replace everything (front inserts, mounts, etc. I was hoping to just do the inserts but sounds like that's not an option, on the front anyway. I have more questions but they should go on another thread.
Constant rattle sound, even on perfect flat road = it can be worn shock absorber itself (not mount).
Another option is: track control arm (wishbone) ball joint (that holding hub) or track control arms bushings (if we talking about rear suspension).

Reason: ? ? ?
Yea i also have that rattling noise coming from my rear drivers side tire area. I checked for loose bolts but nothing and its only when i go over bumpy roads I'm thinking maybe strut mounts?
I don't know what year you have, but maybe Monroe QuickStrut with all new parts is a solution?

Grab the rear sway bar and see if it moves inside the rubber bushings. Mine did and I replaced those bushings and all was quiet again...

if you check around using google, the strut system on camrys and avalons are defective from the manufacturer. Theres a rubber bushing/spacer at the top of each strut that was designed to reduce the gap between it and the body.. since the older camry's struts setup was slightly smaller..this was how they compensated for a bigger body. After driving a while, this rubber fitting gets compressed, and stays that way apparently..causing ALL..and i mean ALL struts to eventually start to rattle that way. when and how long it takes is up to how u drive and how bumpy it is. Welcome to new struts. they are about 80 a piece for a decent set.
:edit: i just purchased a 97 camry in september, and found my right front strut to make tons of rattles and loud noises over bumps or sometimes just rough roads. that was my findings, and new struts fixed the issue.
