Camry wants to stall!

2000 Camry 4 Cyl
156,000 miles

When I start the engine everything is good, no problems. After a few minutes of idling it starts going really low, and it wants to stall but doesn't. When driving everything is fine no problems, its only like at a stop light when it wants to do the same thing all over again (wanting to stall). Maintenance has been done. As soon as it started happening a couple days ago, I got the code P0442 (EVAP system) small leak detected. Wanna try and fix before I have to take in to a mechanic to prevent future problems.

Start by cleaning the throttle body and idle air control valve. Many times a dirty idle air control valve is the cause of the symptoms you describe. Here a good DIY thread on how to do it on your 5SFE engine:

I cleaned the throtle body and the IAC, I did a quick job on it. I had to go to work, so when I turned on the car no smoke came out. So I think that wasn't good enough for a cleaning job, when I started the car and drove off it responded with more power and it was idling higher which is good. wasn't acting up anymore, but I still want to do a better job on it. Now I have to replace my timing belt cuz I noticed a crack, and no check engine lights have came up since.

The next time you try cleaning the throttle body and idle air control valve, take a little bit more time. Start by spraying the cleaner liberally down in to the hole in the base of the throttle body that leads to the idle air control valve. Let that soak for about 30 minutes while you go on the clean the rest of the throttle body. Then put everything back together and start the car.
