hey guys,
just wondering if any of you got leds for your instrument panel, I was going to replace mine with super bright ones, so basically just wondering if anyone has any good experience with a particular website or seller on ebay, cuz I just checked out ebay and there were like a thousand different sellers selling the same thing for like different prices, thanks.
hey I just saw a 1.5w led, is that ok to use? also your headlight!!!!how did you make it like that??!!!
1.5w led probably won't work for instrument panels since most of them use incandescent bulbs with a twist-on base. superbrightleds.com sells leds with the base to match so it'll be plug-n-play. Been a while since I've looked to see what new things they have, but they might have an LED in watts with the base now; check their site and see what they've got.
Also forgot to mention that people have put foil around inside the cluster to help trap the light to just around the gauges so it's brighter.
As for my headlight, which part of it are you referring to?
It was a HID projector retrofit and custom "halos" with acrylic rods and 5mm LEDs as light source.

i thought the the light and the base were different, like you pull out the light from the base and replace with another light, like this guy did in step 7: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t88355.html
and I was refering to the projectors, they look awesome, but I dunno how to make it like that, and also guessing it will be expensive
I forgot that they were wedge based bulbs. I guess you can use the high wattage LEDs then, but you might get hot spots.
I found a picture of my friend's cluster that put in regular blue wedge based LEDs from superbrightleds.com.
He didn't sand down the lens, so you can see at 20 & 120 there are bright spots where the LEDs are.
I'm not sure if you can sand down the lens with high watt LEDs since they're different from regular LEDs.
But from what I remember, it looked to be bright enough with just regular LEDs and no foil, so I don't think high watt LEDs are really needed.
The foil would have helped made the light spread out more even, but he didn't want to do it and was satisfied with the way it looked.
The headlights were retrofitted with projectors from a complete Audi A6 HID projector headlight I won on ebay. Cost me about $200 shipped, so it was expensive.

thanks alot for the info man, but can you show me a picture of the type of led you were refering to that you have to sand down?
these ones I found on ebay, which one is the best one in your opinion?
The last 2 bulbs with the tall dome lens are the kinds that you can safely sand down flat. These kinds of leds have more narrow light output angle so it focuses the light to look brighter and go further.
The first 2 are small with wider angle lens, so it may work better without any modification compared to the last 2.
I think the 1st one would give the best output with less chance of creating brighter spots.
The 2nd one would definitely be the brightest with the best light output, but I think you might end up with brighter spots like in that picture with the blue. Maybe putting foil will help eliminate the chance of that.
The last 2 bulbs I remember seeing pictures of someone using those and sanding the lens flat then put foil around, it looked even and clean like stock incandescent bulbs.
I swear.... If i get another gen 3... i'm putting together a full DIY for this.

those are the sizes you need. get led bulbs that fit. if you need to know how mnay to buy, open up your dash and look on the back of the gauge cluster. for LEDs, the higher the mcd rating, the higher the lumens (light output).

hey man
I finally got around to changing the bulb, and ya you were soo right the first one didn't have any brightspots, but the rest did. so as I recieved only 2 so far, I put them in to test them, here is the result:
the left side has the stock bulbs
now the problem is around that 140mph area, why is it so dim? it was the same when I switch the bulbs....
oh and.......l
like the picture says, is that in miles too? or kms?
