Gear indicator "D" in instructment panel not lighting up

I have a 1994 Camry and the "D" gear indicator in the instructment panel is not lighting up. My garage guy told me that in order to replace the burned out bulb, he'd have to take out the whole dash board. He's talking about 2-3 hours of work to replace the bulb. It doesn't sound too logical to me to take so long and so complicate to change a bulb. Does anyone know how to change the bulb here?? Your help would be very much appreciated.

Yeah, it should only take about 15 minutes to remove the cluster and 20-25 to put in a new bulb and re-install everything.

2-3 hours??? is he handicap? it'd take me 3 minutes to access the cluster, a couple minutes to get it out and put the new bulb in, and 5 minutes tops to put it all back together. this totals 10 minutes at the very least. if i take my time, maybe 15. sounds like you need to find a new mechanic. he was attempting to take you for a ride on the ol' shaft.

as far as taking out the whole dash board, he must be on some kind of drugs. only things you need to remove are the black dash cover and the cluster. it's only a matter of prying the U shaped black piece off and unscrewing a few screws to get the larger black piece off.

This is a special thanks again to HILL8570 for providing me with the link with pictures of how to replace the indicator bulb. I finally had a chance to do it over the weekend. It took me less than one hour to complete the job. As always, being cautious aobut not to break anything by mistake took more time. The second time around should take less than half the time. I also replaced the "P" indicator as well. Interestingly, the "P" bulb is green and "R,N,D,2,1" all use clear bulb. The green one is 4.5 times more than the clear one. Who knows what is the reason for costing more. I am posting the Toyota part number for reference here. Hope it will be useful to someone else. Part No. may be for Canada use only.

Clear 90072-02005 Cost: CAD1.50
Green 83109-12030 Cost: CAD6.70
