3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
i just got two resonators installed to quieten things down a little for daily driving
and got my Greddy E-manage Ultimate installed and tuned
so the legend is proven.....the 3VZ-FE motor runs pretty darn rich at top end.
after 5000rpm at WOT...we took out about 12~15% fuel at the injectors and gave it on average 5degree of timing.....
the car ran much smoother and breathed a bit better top end for sure.
eventhough i only gained about 5ish whp on the camry on paper, i got this after i installed two resonators which sucked about 10whp i'd say...
so afterall, i gained maybe 10~15whp on the 3vz camry if i still had the straight pipes.
but let's say if i had any sort of FI...those losses from the resonators would have disappeared...afterall it's hard to get NA horses...especially with an old motor that has god knows how many miles on it.
Damn look at that torque curve.... its flat. And 170whp/170wtq really isn't too shabby for a 16yr old engine rated on the OLD SCALE @ 185hp/190lb/ft.
So other than it running better, is it more fuel efficient now? Since you pulled fuel, I'm guessing it would be.
EDIT: I would probably be at around the same level as your car if I still had my Camry. Regular maintenance on the Highlander would probably have bought me a S/C already.
170 whp on a gen 3 is pretty respectable in my books
accounting for drive-train power loss (lets say 15%), you should be putting out ~192 hp at the crank. Could be more, depending on what the real power loss is (*ahem* Resonators *cough cough* )
That torque curve is one of my favorite things about the 3VZ

Need performance parts?
Shoot me a PM, I'll see what I can do
193bhp is well over the stock 185bhp...but not as good as the jdm one rated at 200bhp
but then my motor is not brand new...i estimate it to have around 100000+ km on there.
not bad....but now i've driven a 5 speed 1MZ supercharged at 7.5psi....i feel like my car is super slow

as for fuel efficiency. i wouldn't know yet. i have ran too much fuel idling for this tank of gas...i'll do more accurate fuel efficiency calculations when i fill up again.
at this point, i'm so hungry for boost, I'm thinking if i should simply get a supercharger or not
hey actually, quick question...when you did the straight pipes (similar to mine now im assuming - long tube headers, y pipe, no cat, no res, straight through muffler) did it make your car run ridiculously rich? I'm getting terrible gas mileage and losing a lot of power in the mid range RPMs.
sorry to thread jack, but it seems like you know what you are talking about with this...

I was just wondering the same thing, I'm getting OBX headers and plan on customizing a duel exhuast with just strate pipes and had this run through my mind a couple times.
